Scary Faults 28 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My neighbor is a retired service manager (think big cat).He was telling me about a problem they had some years ago with a microswitch. This switch was connected to the brake pedal, it's purpose was to switch off the cruise control when the brake pedal was pressed, this switch was faulty thus when the brakes were applied it didn't switch off the cruise control, instead the cruise control sensing the car was slowing down applied more throttle! -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2001 2.0ltr hatch rear brake pads 8 Mar 2008 (Forum)
hi, while driving along today with my window down I noticed my rear brake pads were rattling especially over rougher roads. If I apply my foot brake, or pull my handbrake on first click the rattle goes away.I replaced the pads about a year ago, discs are fine. Does anyone know how to stop this happening also should there be shims fitted, as there was'nt any fitted originally when I fitted the pads. -
Vauxhall - Vectra B - Brake problem after pad change 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
A friend asked me to change his front pads following an MOT. After doing this I test drove the car and noticed that the brake pedal jumps very slightly when braking. This is not regular and is not associated with speed. When it does this it is accompanied by a slight "tick". My friend told me that the car had been doing this for some 3 weeks. -
Zafira rear brakes 20 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The piston turns and I'm pushing as hard as I can. I've tried the old trick of levering against an old brake pad but fear I might damage the caliper if I do it much more. I'd rather not undo the bleed nipple as I bled the brakes a couple of months ago. Any ideas? Thanks, -
Rear brake drum wear-VW polo 3 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Have rear brake shoes gone the same way as brake pads - harder than the discs? It is that our k plate polo rear drums have worn to the minimum tollerance in 23000 mile approx 3 years and the shoes are no where near worn. -
drum brake dummy?? mk2 1988 vw polo 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
ok dont laugh....ive never worked on drum brakes before i have a issue on one side...the brake binds on one side with the handbrake off after a quick inspection the issue i can see is that the clyinder only moves on one side...meaning the cylinder is the usualy tube shape with a piston/plunger at each end, i would imagine the plunger should move outward equaly at both ends?? -
Latest Chav extra? 26 Apr 2006 (Forum)
On Friday night I saw what must be the latest Chav extra, and feel was probably illegal. It was an extra strip brake light fixed to the rear window, just under the original high brake light. What, in my opinion, made it illegal was that when the brake pedal was pressed it flashed red and blue alternatively. So sitting at traffic lights, with a foot on the brake, meant it showed a blue flashing light to anyone approaching. -
Gears or Brakes? 21 Mar 2006 (Forum)
May I ask the wisdom here assembled a question? I was taught to use the gear box for routine slowing down and to use the brakes only as a last resort. In the words of my still-respected instructor, "Use your brains, not your brakes." I recently read in an IAM newsletter a statement that said the exact opposite. I have always respected the IAM but to read that contradiction of the way I was taught has left me in a quandary. -

Carlton braking shudder 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I have a Carlton Estate, many miles under its belt but still a good workhorse that has started shuddering when braking hard. As it is possible to feel the brake pedal fluctuating combined with a noise a bit like the ABS coming into effect I assume a warped disk. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I start replacing all the disks to find out which one is the culprit. -
Astra MkII offside rear brake 3 Apr 2001 (Forum)
A couple of months ago the Rear drivers side wheel jammed on, and i could not move the car without wacking the wheel with a hammer (RAC recommendation). Now however the brake makes a ratlling noise when i go round a right hand bend or go ove a big bump, and sounds like the brake drum is hitting the wheel or is loose, but i can't see anything visible, can anybody help? -
Citroen C1 - Brakes 13 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Hi. I have a citroen c1 2009. I'm having issues with the front brake discs and pads. They were replaced 12 months ago however I have had regularly had to take my car back to kwik fit to have them replaced due to the brake discs warping. The car shakes when braking at high speeds. -
2003 citroen xsara picasso 2.0 HDI - Brakes to the right.. 4 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I have a braking problem on the above. The car pulls to the right when using the foot brake and its slow to come to a halt. I give it to my friend to sort out who is an old school mechanic working from home. He has said that no brake fluid would come through and he has even tried using a compressor to force it through and it still would not come through. -
1.9 TDI 2003 - VW Sharan power loss, hissing brake pedal 30 Sep 2012 (Forum)
For a couple of years my Sharan had a slight hissing noise from the brake pedal. My trusted mechanic checked it out, foudn no obvious leak but reckoned it was harmless. A month ago it suddenly became much louder, like a leaking balloon, brake pedal stiffened and he replaced the servo. -
Biting brakes 27 Apr 2011 (Ask HJ)
Do all Golf 6 models like mine have the problem that the brakes snatch fiercely at low speeds, e.g. when slowing to a halt or coasting downhill in a queue... -
Ford Escort 1300cc 1990 model - Red warning light sometimes comes on when I brake 13 Apr 2011 (Forum)
The red warning light comes on when I apply foot break. It does not happen all the time. I have checked the brake fluid level and topped it up. Is it possible i could have a fluid leak in the braking system. The car manual says the red warning light has two functions, ie, if the hand break is still on, or applied, or if the brake fluid level is below line. -
Nissan Micra K12 - No Brakes !! 26 May 2010 (Forum)
She is still a learner and last Sunday evening i was with her . She slowed down for traffic lights and lo and behold no brakes. She went into back of car in front , not much damage but i limped the 2 mile journey home with some braking. We got the car checked out and the brakes are back to normal again. No fluid loss or leakage could be found , rear wheel cylinders are bone dry. -

Fiat ducato total brake failure 27 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a fiat ducato motorhome 1990 2litre petrol. I went to take it out tonight put in in reverse, pulled back a couple of yards, applied the brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor with no resitance. Brake fluid was low but not low enough to have sucked in air. No visible/obvious leaks. When i press the brake pedal with the engine off, i can hear a sort of CHUFF as the pedal goes down. -
Ford Fiesta Brake warning lamp stuck on. 4 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Could it be possible that this lamp is wired to any other switch such as a brake pressure balance switch which could have been actuated during the hard braking where I applied a very high force to the pedal. I believe that some vehicles are fitted with sensors which would detect any imbalance between the two circuits but are they latching?
