  • VW Passat - Scammed by (deleted) 15 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I paid £2000 for a recon engine in my passat and regretted it badly, the car came back with endless problems which ultimately lead me to trade the thing in for a big loss on what i could have got for it because of all the fault lights up on the dash- DPF filter, glowpugs (engine management), i count myself lucky to have made it to the dealer without breaking down AGAIN!!
  • Advice on a future used car purchase 31 Jan 2017 (Forum)
I did consider buying another car last year, but after suffering 'paralysis through analysis' decided to stick with my 07 plate GTD Golf (no-dpf). Sadly the Golf's electrics/central locking is playing up and I'm concerned it may lead to a more serious, show stopping issue. I'm caught in two minds whether to buy something roughly 10 years old - petrol, FSH, maybe 1 owner, a brand/model thats generally considered reliable or go for something like a 3 year old Auris (maybe a Civic) and keep it until it dies - I've always kept my cars a long time, better the devil you know!
  • 2003 1.8l Mondeo Estate, 144k miles - Ford Mondeo Mk3 Hesitates and Stutters during acce 23 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Answer from the other web page below:  It could be the coil pack, they are incredibly sensitive to damage if the engine is turned over with a plug lead disconnected - they generate such a high voltage without a plug to limit it, that the internal insulation breaks down. It could also be a partial blockage in the fuel system, if changing the fuel filter disturbed some crud in the pipes.

(Milk delivery floats, and golf buggy carts, commonly seen in the mid to late 20 th century even used heavy Lead-Acid batteries and yet they seemed to work satisfactorily). P.S. As a final example of benchmarking 'comparison' - the 'conversion efficiency' of solar energy to 240 volt rms a.c. electricity, using modern, roof mounted domestic solar panel arrays etc, is around 15% - makes you think doesn't it ?

  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Cat red hot, cyl 1 plug carboned, black 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Obviously this releases a lot of heat!!!! Found distributor cover was very messed up so, replaced, plugs, leads, distributor cover, rotor arm, and air filter. AND oxygen sensor (in the exhaust manifold) the old one was rather carboned up. Spark good on all cylinders. So after less than ten minutes running the CAT still gets red hot.
  • Hit and Run Compensation 3 Jun 2010 (Forum)
one final note is that this driver has done this stuff once before and got away with it then, in the criminal courts as the person they hit then was a family friend and they got the case dropped.  Which leads on if the police were brave and took action first time around maybe this driver would of got the message but they let him run free which probably made the driver think he is even more invincible and unstoppable and gave him the wrong attitude.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 03 2.0 Engine cutting out - diesel 17 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My car had a full service history up until I bought it, but when we changed the fuel / diesel filter I found it to be very, very dirty inside and was also surprised to see it was a Denso fuel filter which lead me to believe it may never have been replaced from new, maybe some of you out there could tell me more? The replacement filter I had bought form Mazda, was Mazda branded, not Denso, so does anyone know if the diesel filters are changed as part of a normal service?
  • Honda UK - Where did it all go wrong? 22 May 2009 (Forum)
Just flawed and old-hat cars with little variation and, now the S2000 has gone, Honda no longer make class-leading engines, which is a massive shame. I used to love this brand and you could sense their core values of technical innovation, design and attention to detail in their cars. Now its just a hotch-potch of forgettable models and so-so build quality.
  • Vauxhall Tigra (1994 - 2000) - Advice on what to do now. 30 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I refused to take the car back and they took it in and said they will have a look, i waited for 30mins and the manager came out and said i cant figure it out leave it with me and i will strip it down and have a look. 3 days on, they take no liability and say its the coil pack and that i should pay for it as its got nothing to do with their clutch work. they pointed to the coil pack because cylinder 3 does not fire up, they changed the sparks and ignition leads as well. i called trading standards and they said they are breaching their contract as they are giving the car back to me damaged. i threatened the head office with going ahead with trading standards, and the guy i spoke to said there's no need to do that we can work around it. he said they will get it sorted.
  • Help me choose my dad?s next car... 21 Mar 2006 (Forum)
The XM's lack of a/c has frustrated him on many occasions over the past 13 years but he has enjoyed the frugal and torquey diesel engine and, of course, the class leading comfort. An auto box is not a must-have, but it would certainly be a nice luxury, however many of the cars below are not available with automatic gearboxes. My Dad has been happily driving my sister's manual Punto on many occasions over the last months, after many auto-only years.

  • Back from Japan 19 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Public transport, as you would expect, was reasonably priced and superbly efficient - not to mention clean and with a freedom from UK-style anti-social behaviour. Driving in Japan was not as bad as I had been lead to believe. Most traffic signs are also in English and congestion, even in Tokyo, was not that bad. The Tokyo 'Metropolitan Expressway' (a mostly elevated two-lane highway system) was pretty busy, but away from that the traffic moved reasonably freely, even right in the centre of town.

The needle did previously reach this position but now will not move beyond 70 unless the car is sitting in traffic. The fan does not activate until the needle approaches the mark after 90 which leads me to believe 90 should be the normal full operating temperature position. The in car heater does produce heat. After 15 minutes of running the engine was warm to touch but the top hose was not warm.

"I'm not disputing the fact he should receive treatment by the NHS but it's quite disproportionate for a comparatively small health authority which is already facing difficulties balan- cing its budget. It's going to lead to cutbacks in other services." A Department spokesman said it "does not hold special allocations for special cases or hold contingency funds". Money was allocated according to a form-ula weighted according to levels of deprivation and including provision for asylum seekers. mike.waites@ypn.co.uk

He did all of the things that most of us would, such as check the air filter, fit new plugs and HT leads and look for faults in the fuel system. It was all to no avail. It was suggested that the ECU was to blame and, as you will know, this item is far too expensive to replace in the vague hope that it could be at fault.
  • Renault 2.2dT - Glow Plug Change 22 Jan 2003 (Forum)
The only "must have" was some blue tac in the 7mm socket so as not to lose the electrical connection nut (a magnetic socket would be much better). Long nose pliers were also required to manipulate the electric leads. We inspected the inlet manifold and its bolts very carefully and came to the conclusion that it has never been removed. How many Renault dealers do you think are fully aware of this? How many do you think use 1/4 drive sockets to carry out this job, but charge the customer for removing the inlet manifold?
  • Speed Bumps from The Times 24 Aug 2001 (Forum)
A three-year study by the Transport Research Laboratory concluded earlier this month that humps can lead to a 60% rise in exhaust emissions as cars slow down, speed up and slow down again. The inflatable hump has a valve instead of an airhole and uses a pressure gauge to determine the speed of an approaching vehicle.
  • self-driving cars on motorways - Insurers don't like 23 Oct 2020 (Forum)
It simply isn’t safe enough and its introduction will put UK motorists’ lives at risk.” Ministers have been keen to promote the UK as a world-leading country for the development of autonomous vehicles, taking steps to revamp legislation to allow early adoption of driverless cars.
