  • Rear brake lights 28 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I managed to alert a driver at a set of lights recently that he had no brake lights. He just said, yeah I know!. Considering all modern cars have a third brake light, I have lost count of cars with the two side lights not working. Or is there a general fault. As we have a lack of police on the roads, I can see this situation getting worse.
  • Electronic Parking Brake (Passat) 5 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Give me an old fashioned handbrake any day. Ex-colleague of Andy's had had his brand new Passat just days when the parking brake refused to come off. Andy's had his about four months and 12,000 miles, and yesterday his parking brake refused to go ON. I received a forlorn text this morning saying he'd watched it go away on a VW Assist recovery truck!
  • Toyota Yaris 2003 - Servicing 5 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The price quoted for the service was £143, but he said this morning that the brake fluid change, if required, would be extra (even though the service schedule says to change it) Should I insist that the brake fluid is changed? Will not changing the brake fluid effect the Toyota warranty?
  • Motorway brake failure 6 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The last couple of times I have driven for a longish stretch on a wet motorway, I have gone use the brakes and found they did not work. This only happens after 40ish miles of wet motorway driving, and a couple of hard applications seems to restore the proper effect again. The pedal is still hard when this happens, and feels much like brake fade does.
  • 1998 Punto 60S shakes under braking 16 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My wife's 1998 75,000 mile Fiat Punto 60S has a distinct shake under heavy braking similar to having warped discs. It seems to be coming from the nearside only. The car does not have warped brake discs as I recently changed them (together with the front pads)to try and cure the problem but it persists.
  • Braking technique question 26 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Not your Alpine pass variety, just a mile or so which proves too steep to keep in check simply by closing the throttle. I've always favoured braking using a series of relatively forceful (but not sharp) applications of the middle pedal (or the left-hand one for us auto drivers!), whereas my friend advocates steady continuous braking all the way down the hill.
  • Citroen Xantia HDi brake pad wear 10 Sep 2001 (Forum)
My Citroen Xantia HDi 110 bhp estate was bought in November 1999. At the first service I was told that the front brake pads would need replacing in 4000 miles - I had done 8300. I had the pads replaced at the service to save taking the car back later. At 14000 miles this week, the brake pad replacement light has come on, so it would appear I need another set of pads!
  • Scary Moment 4 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Any advice or clues? Coming home from work this morning, as I approached a set of lights under braking I passed over a ridge in the road - it has always been there - probably as the brakes had just started to bite. Travelling no more than 25 - 30 and slowing, the whole car bounced and as it settled back down I had the impression the brakes had failed.
  • Audi A3/S3 brake problem 23 Jan 2001 (Forum)
HJ I have recently bought an Audi S3 and recently had a fright when after driving on medium wet roads, the brakes failed to work at the next junction. I know to operate the brake (left footed if necessary) to clear the discs after a flood, but the latest models of A3 and S3 seem to suffer from the discs collecting water worse than any of the cars I have driven in the last 10 years.

  • Can an insurer refuse to pay out following an accident because of an MoT advisory on brakes? 5 Dec 2017 (Ask HJ)

  • MOT / headlamps / brakes / con-men 28 Dec 2004 (Forum)
The MOT sheet shows failure on parking brake performance. Had shoe and cylinder renewal been necessary, then surely it would have failed on service brake performance also? Is my logic correct that if it passes on service brake but fails on parking brake, then the problem lies in the parking brake actuation mechanism and not in the brake itself?
