As a former traffic policeman, I endorse the use of left-foot braking in automatic vehicles.

As an ex-Traffic Policeman (accident investigator) and a person who has left-foot braked for over 30 years (even though I sometimes drive a manual car), I felt I must comment. When left-foot braking an automatic car there is never any possibility of pedal confusion. Over the years I dealt with a number of automatic accidents, but the drivers insisted they had not pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. Obviously the lack of skidmarks or abrasions on the road surface proved otherwise. The result is the faster they go the harder they press the wrong pedal, which increases their speed. If you own an automatic car and do not drive any other car, find somewhere very quite and practise using your left foot. For those of the older variety, they can remember that all motorcycles were fitted with the rear brake being operated by the left foot. Finally, nowhere in the Highway Code or Road Transport legislation does it say that it is illegal to use your left foot to brake.

Very many thanks for your support. It's the kind of counterpoint I need against extraordinary opposition from very same kind of confused and uncoordinated people who end up running over and killing their nearests and dearests in supermarket carparks.
