Insuring a car you don't own 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I just bought another car. I still have my old car. It is off road and uninsured. At present my brother does not have a car and wants to use my old car. He wants to insure it in his own name and use it. Can he do it while the car is still under my name? -
'Stylish' car under £1500 ..possible ? 10 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Very briefly, I gave up my well paid job over 8 years ago to look after my 96yr old mum who lives with us. My wife has her own car which she needs for work 5 days a week. Up til last week I had an old diesel estate for our very large dog but he sadly died last week. I now am looking for a car under £1500 if possible so that I can continue to take my mum out everyday. -
Volvo V70 (2007 - ) - Which £18,000 family estate car? 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
A growing family means we'd like to replace our diesel hatchback with an estate car. With a budget of £18,000 my first thought was an 18 month old V70, but after some research I'm now also considering: - A 3 year old E280 CDi. - A 12 month old Honda Accord Touring. - A 12 month old Mondeo Estate 2.2 TCDi. - A Mazda6. -

Neither SWMBO nor I have fuelled wrongly yet, despite having a diesel and a petrol car between us, tho that is largely because she always drives the diesel. ... -

BMW 3 Series Compact E46 - Old Car Electrics 7 Nov 2013 (Forum)
On investigation later most of the dashboard lights were on as were the brake lights and the central locking did not work either. Surprisingly the car started and ran OK with all the lights out but removing the key left all the lights etc still on. Disconnecting the battery turned everything off but reconnecting lit it all up again! I get a feeling that HJ is right about old electrics but this seems a case of pay up as it is quite a decent car, nowhere near scrap. -

New old car or old new one? 15 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Here's a debate for a cold winter's day. Let's take a Mondeo as an example. The new one is now scheduled for a 2014 launch, the current one... -
Focus - new or old? 16 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Maybe the price would be more negotiable for the 'old' model? By all accounts, the new Focus is a 'better' car all-round than the original - though at the cost of considerable blandness, I have to say. So which model would backroomers recommend for a 'keeper' - SWMBO does about 12k miles a year and tends to keep cars for some time (the Passat's done 165k and this replaced an Audi 100 with 190k on the clock!). -
Old cars and the environment. 11 Mar 2001 (Forum)
I read of some research in the Netherlands a while ago where they calculated that by reducing the average age of vehicles on the road by three years they would actually increase the net emissions by four per cent, largely because of the emissions created by making cars. That's even taking into account the greater efficiency of new engines. It's one of the arguments I use for not getting rid of my fourteen year old Peugeot 309. The old XU diesel is dirty in today's terms, but it's turning in an average of over 50mpg, cruises happily and quietly at 70-75 and I've known park benches less reliable (we do around 10,000 miles a year and the engine has not needed a repair of any kind in the last five years). -

Recommendation for 21 yr old male 7 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Hi, this is my first post. I have been asked to recommend a suitable car for the 21 year old son of a friend of mine, no more than £3K - £4K. Something small probably, nothing too fancy and where the insurance won't cripple him. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on suitable small, economical, low insurance cars that might fall into this price bracket. -
BMW 3 Series 320 Ci Se coupe in gold 93 K miles - A 14 year old BMW 16 May 2014 (Forum)
A neighbour has a gold BMW 3 series manual 320 Ci Se 93 K miles he says he is too old to drive. Is this car a "classic" yet? Will it become of "interest" >>>> I like the colour / the engine (a 6 pot) I have no idea of value >>>> the car has not gote leather seats. -
Vauxhall Astra E (1984 - 1991) - Autotrader find - 20 yr old GTE cabrio for £10k. 10 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Whatever you think of the car (and I'm a sucker for a mk2 GTE, personally), it is genuinely heartwarming to find a 20 yr old car in this condition, let alone one of the most stolen / thrashed / abused models of its era. http://tinyurl.com/nnmhnl 2,080 genuine miles from new, and absolutely pristine. £10k might be pushing it, and I note the usual car salesman bullplop in the ad, but I think this time they might genuinely have a point - where else would you find one like this? -
FIAT - Fiat Panda/500 1.2 petrol or 1.3 Diesel 1 May 2008 (Forum)
I am drawn to the latter but I still link little FIATS to revvy little petrol engines. Any feedback from those in the know or owners of both cars? I note that the 1.2 is based on the old FIRE engine that over 20 years old but it was a terrific engine in my old Uno (first car), outlasted the rest of the car. Now significantly undersquare though so is it still free revving? -
Insurance Laws 27 Sep 2001 (Forum)
My girlfriend is getting her new car sooner than expected leaving not much time to flog the old one - about 3 days in fact. She will need to be insured on the new one leaving the old one uninsured. It's taxed and MOTd. I have 'driving other cars' third party cover in my insurance. -
