Which SUV to replace diesel estate? 26 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Fuel economy isn't that important, but it manages mid 30s on the combined figures. For £20,000 I can get a brand new one with all the toys, some £13,000 less than the Volvo or the VW. Are there any other cars I should be considering before I sign on the line? -
Running in a Diesel - advice please! 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I will shortly be taking delivery of a Volvo S60 D5 2.4 Turbo Diesel. I will be picking it up from a dealer about 200 miles away from home. For this journey (and subsequent trips for the first thousand miles or so) should I stay mainly on A and B roads giving the engine a mix of cruising speeds and light / hard acceleration or would I be better to sit it on the motorway at mixed cruising speeds. -
Diesel servicing costs? 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Ok so I travel about 15k miles pa mostly on motorways and am looking for the ideal car to chew up the miles for me, budget ~£10k, hoping to buy ex-fleet at auction. Cars I have in mind are: 3 series volvo S60 A4 Passat Freelander (???) Audi TT (??) Key requirements are that it's an auto. Doing my spreadsheet calculations, it looks like diesel is the way to go (assuming 10mpg gap between diesel and petrol this equates to about a £500 saving pa in fuel costs) Question is, how can I quantify the difference in servicing costs between the 2 engine types? -
Advice please on an estate.... 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I am looking at spending about 8-9K on a car and charging the company mileage to cover costs, probably about 15,000 miles a year, I will be getting in the region of 35p per mile. The question is what car - I like the look of the following: Merc C250 TD sports estate Volvo V70 / S70 2.5TD Obviousley at the sort of money I will be paying I will looking at 90 K mileage, what kind of depreciation and maintenance costs can I expect on these cars, also what kind of mpg will I get? -
petrol - a difference? 3 Sep 2003 (Forum)
But during the many times we took it to France we always filled it with 98 or 95 supermarket unleaded (there\'s a big difference in fuel prices between garages and supermarkets over here) and it never missed a beat. Since moving here I have put supermarket 95 unleaded in our Volvo 940 2 litre, old Honda Civic Shuttle and, currently, Honda 2 Litre Accord Coupe, without - apparently - the slightest problem. I can\'t really believe UK supermarkets can get away with selling an inferior product for the same price as a big petrol company forecourt. -
Which affordable diesel family car? 30 May 2003 (Forum)
b) 25k miles private miles per year c) comfy driving position and d) with air con, ABS and cruise control. I'm not in the luxury car market, so any BWM/Merc/Saab/Volvo recommendations are (sadly) not an option - are they? I guess I'd be looking around the 10k mark (including part-ex) and would need some kind of finance (e.g. personal loan at around 6%). The HDci Mondeo (130bhp) seems the best option so far, but any other cars I should be considering? -
Estate car recommendations? 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Image isn't important, and neither is fuel economy, since i won't be doing that much mileage - having said that, i'd prefer a deisel, but know nothing about buying a cheap deisel, so would be wary. My first thoughts have been an old Volvo estate (740, 940, 960, they all look the same to me?), Sierra estate, Pug 405 estate - any other ideas? I suppose a Jap car would be best (against all my principles, but that's being done to death on another thread!) -
Harwich docks 8 Sep 2002 (Forum)
The guys who monitor the pound said the place nearly empty although I estimated there were 40 cars awaiting collection. As I was inspecting my BM, they were unloading about 6 Volvo coupes and more Golf, BMW and Mercs off the latest ferry from Cuxhaven! After a good hour inspecting everything was ok and as ordered on the car I set off to drive all the way 'oop north' without registration plates. -
Used car prices in free fall? And some Masonry! 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
So, brummers are not too good an investment right now. Should be some bargains about but what is my old Volvo worth. Thruppence? I haven't borrowed to change a car in years and hopefully never will. I usually buy three or four year olds from fleet auctions. As my Masonic friends might say, "Limit you desires in all of life's stations and, rising to eminence by merit, you will live respected and die regretted." -
Seized sump nut. 6 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I thought I had found something close to it today.........But, A major high street tyre specialist are offering oil and filter change for £10 with Duckhams oil or £15 with semi synthetic. Any car up to 2:3L. My 10 year old Volvo 360 (two litre B200K non injection) fitted the bill. The outlet in Warrington were very obliging, ordering in a filter as they didn't have one in stock and today I went along for the job. Alas the technician was unable to release the sump nut stating it had seized solid. -
BL - World leaders on corrosion 5 Dec 2001 (Forum)
As we have such wet conditions in the UK and use so much salt in the winter, BL / Rover should have been world leaders in preventing corrosion decades ago. Look at Volvo and Saab and the weather in Scandinavia. BL's plan of building cars to last only 5 years, hoping that customers would buy another, seriously backfired on them and on the British tax payer. I speak from experience having owned a mid 80s Rover 213 then a 1990 Montego - serious rust problems at Montego's first MoT. -
Cheap LPG? 16 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Now, LPG is a great consideration, particularly when you can get fully integrated cars (eg Vauxhalls+Volvos) these days - I am aware LPG does not run as efficiently volume-wise but I could in theory save about a third of my fuel bill a year which is still very tempting. I can't help but think that this is going to go the same way as diesel in a few years time (particularly if more people do invest in an LPG vehicle) and the government will start piling the tax on the gas. -
bigger estate 26 Feb 2001 (Forum)
So, as I am something of a fan of VW warrantys I am leaning towards passatt tdi. But am I getting best value for my £. All those daily mail mums in there Volvo estates can't be wrong? Actually.....I bet thet don't have 2 go to Cornwall from Hants every week. One last thing- really does need to have a bit of power to join Motorway safely. Best regards & thanks Pablo -

New car shortlist - down to 3 21 Aug 2007 (Forum)
And the seat height adjuster and the indicators are irritations although they wouldn't have been deal-breakers. Volvo V50 2.0D - I couldn't see what that could do at £21,000 that a VW or Skoda couldn't do for £18,000. Audi A3 2.0 TDI - same comment as the Volvo and too small for out needs. (A4 is too expensive, and not discounted as much as a BMW which might have put it within reach .) -
V70 2.4T software tuning: Results 15 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Seriously impressive, and even more so because it is totally effortless (the engine feels as if it is unburstable) and delivered with the usual Volvo refinement. It truly is now the only gear I actually need, as it will pull from tickover, wake up at 1500RPM, and then charge hard all the way to the limiter at 7200RPM. The thing is though, there are two more gears left to come, and when you grab fourth gear, it's off, again, just as hard, and fifth is a superb, ultra relaxed, overtaking gear. -
Insurance Write Off Value. How much can I negotiate? 26 Sep 2024 (Forum)
If I am unhappy, how much can I expect to negotiate on buying back as I have already been offered £500 to break the car on the Volvo forum. Loads of questions I know. But I really liked the car, kept it serviced and running well and would have expected many more years of happy motoring. Any advice much appreciated. -
Help! Which car? 8 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I like the look of the Audi Q2, BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, Volkswagen T - Roc and the Tiguan, and the Volvo Xc40 Any advice, on any of those would be fantastic. Best suited to my needs, best mpg, best engine/spec, any you'd avoid. Thanks :)
