  • What car for a long road trip across Europe... 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Just basically, wondering what people's advice is as to which car would be the best bet. I was thinking maybe one of the Volvo diesels but from an internet search I can see sometimes they don't return the MPG that is expected. Audi's are usually way out of this price range but the Volkswagen Passat/Estate looks promising...
  • Recommendations for a family car? 27 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I had in mind possibly a Golf TDI, even a Passat if the finance will stretch to it. Also thought about a Volvo. I'm not against something a little more unusual, but don't want to go too mad as this needs to be hassle free. Thanks in advance for your help.
  • Largish Diesel Estate ~ £7K - recommendations ? 31 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I'm 6'4 and I want people to be able to sit behind me. OK mainly children, but still.... I've not been impressed with the volvo, too many faults. I dont want a mondeo or a passat I've had a bit of a think and the options seem to be Honda Accord Mazda 6 Saab 95 Any of these would be 2004-ish Anyone been through these options or comment on them?
  • 'Unbreakable' key codes cracked - Security Risk. 25 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The technology is used in a wide variety of car remote controls from manufacturers including Chrysler, Daewoo, Fiat, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar, Toyota, Volvo, and Volkswagen. Each device has a unique key that has up to 18 billion billion combinations, though in practice a much lower key space is used. Nonetheless, the hardware-dedicated block cypher used in KeeLoq was thought to be secure.
  • Another "what car should I buy?" post 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Would like something a bit smarter & more refined than Ford, Skoda etc (yes I know, I'm throwing money away). And wife requests an automatic. Budget: under £20k. Japanese estates seema bit big/ugly. Like Volvo V50 but no 2-litre diesel automatic. So... Considering buying new - forthcoming Golf Estate, out this summer. No final specs and prices yet, but there will be a 2.0 TDI DSG, and judging by current Golf & Passat should be pretty good.
  • What's a good car for a bad back? 23 Feb 2006 (Forum)
We reckon that for him this requires a vehicle with (a) an elevated driving position and (b) generous headroom, as he's over 6ft tall. The car being replaced is a Volvo 850, more than 12 years old, and my dad believes the relatively low slung driver's seat, into which you have to lower your body, has exacerbated his back problem. So he wants the replacement to have a driver's seat higher off the ground.
  • Bah! - rear wheel drive 10 Feb 2006 (Forum)
We have had the following cars in our drive regularly since we bought the house three years ago: - Hyundai Trajets (V6 and Diesel) Volvo S80 2.9 Subaru Foresters Turbo and NA Suzuki Wagon R+ Honda CR-V plus lots and lots of run of the mill FWD cars and none of them gave a moments cause for concern except in very icy conditions, during which time the 4x4 cars were a doddle.
  • Full range of smaller diesels 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
, Ford Fiesta, Pug 307, possibly the new Mitsubishi Colt, um ... I think that engine from the Mazda3 is going into the Volvo S40, and presumably the Ford Focus. I seem to remember noticing something about a new 1.6 litre diesel for the facelifted Citroen C5 as well, which probably means the Pug 407 will get it, and I think the Corolla is getting a 1.4 or 1.6.
  • Rising scrap prices 27 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I don't know how much per tonne but he took a phone call and said that if the punter could get the car to him he would pay them for it. Meanwhile another lady appeared with an old Volvo 340 and put it on the weighbridge. The transaction didn't take place until after I had gone but again the chap mentioned that he would sort the money out in a bit. This is coupled with a few wrecks disappearing from the fronts of peoples houses.
  • 'Roadster' handsfree kit 26 Oct 2004 (Forum)
A forum search did not return any hits, and Google returned reviews of varying praise, hence asking the question before I buy one. Whatever kit I buy will be used in the relatively peaceful environment that is a Volvo V70 2.4T, with tyre drone the dominant noise source when cruising. The unit appears to meet my needs and be simplicity itself, as shown here: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/3211.htm The only 'problem' I know I will have, but am happy to live with, is the occasional 'didit didit didit' that comes from placing a cellphone in close proximity to the stereo head unit.
  • Your most/least fun car 4 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Perfectly capable of giving you an entertaining drive within the speed limit and without endangering myself or others. Least fun - Vauxhall Astravan And I've owned a Volvo 440, so it must have been dull!
  • New Audi A8 W12 22 Apr 2004 (Forum)
A full bore standing start in deep snow on top of sheet ice gave drama free acceleration to rival my 2.4T Volvo in the dry, with nothing but chattering of anti wheel spin devices to say how hard the car was working to keep the driver out of trouble. In the dry, the way it serenely picked up its skirts and flew, totally drama free, was just as impressive.
  • Faulty Tail Lights 29 Apr 2003 (Forum)
After all, it was a very wet night and I suppose rain could get in and blow a bulb. But for so many cars to have the same problem - surely not. I definitely noted a 52 Reg Volvo at one point so it wasn't just old bangers either. This probably sounds like a petty gripe, but it can be extremely confusing when your driving up behind a motorbike, only to find out its not a bike after all.
  • :-( Car Theft 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Turned to look to where they should go (key hooks about 8 feet from front door), and realised my car keys were gone. Sure enough, my 2001(51) Volvo S80 2.4 SE had been half-inched. Crim must have used a fishing rod to hook the keys from their resting place. Cheeky b***** must also have deiced the windscreen before departing, as my Wife's car was well frosted over this morning.
  • Diesel, pertrol or LPG ? Which is best for the ' 20 Nov 2001 (Forum)
., tend to be ex-fleet / rep cars, high miles. Pertol engines tend to last longer too? - less stressed? Seen a Volvo 940, { LPG converted} for sale - appeared to be a good price too. How reliable are LPG systems / any potentially expensive pit falls? Any sugesetions please on petrol, diesel or LPG and make of car - medium / large hatch / estate
  • excellent police driving 31 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Much to my surprise, the car slowed down to what seemed a safe distance, matched my speed and then took off mucho rapido when I pulled over. As it passed I could see it was a Volvo patrol car. Point is, I was expecting to be tailgated to within a few inches of my life, which seems to be the norm these days for idiots speeding on the motorways if you happen to get in their way.
  • Audi Q2 - a year and a bit 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
    - but this one felt right as soon as I drove it away from the dealer, in the way that its predecessor, a worthy but stodgy Volvo V60, never did.  It looks good in bright blue with silver C-pillars.  It's long enough to seat 4-5 people and also make a good van, small enough not to be a pain in our rural Dorset lanes.
  • SAAB 9-3 (2007 - ) - Saabs gone downhill, or rose tints at work? 1 May 2008 (Forum)
It had no identity or "feel" of its own, and that mass produced feel to the interior was a real let down. I know its fashionable to bemoan the effect of the GM takeover, but my Volvo still feels like a Volvo even though Ford ran the show when it was designed. A Jag still feels like a Jag, a Lotus like a Lotus - big company ownership of smaller ones isn't always a bad thing. I didn't even think of this when I got in the car and formed my impressions - I saw a Saab.
  • Back from Japan 19 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Coupled with a fantastic GPS system in my rental car (which showed a 3D-view of the street and even accurately displayed buildings each side of the road!) I didn't really have any problems. It was interesting to see Mercedes and Volvo making quite an impact on the Japanese market, and I also spotted a few Peugeot dealers! I also found myself behind a Citroen C3 on one of the motorways. Unexpected sightings included an old Xantia driving by Shinjuku station in Tokyo, and a *very* old and battered Volvo 240 estate in the Ginza shopping area!
  • Be very careful when driving in Virginia 1 Nov 2020 (Forum)
In today's DT Motoring section, there is an article about a new Collision Avoidance system developed by Volvo. I am in favour of any active or passive device that enhances my chance of remaining uninjured but I am little worried about the applicability of their research. They monitored the driving behaviour of 241 drivers in Virginia, who covered a total of 2 million miles in 1 year.
