  My initial thought was the battery but the head lights seem bright and the electric windows go up and down with no loss of speed. If i try and turn the radio on it is asking for the radio code.   Another problem i have is that there is a whirling noise everytime i turn whether it be left or right. when the steering wheel returns to stationary position the noise stops - dont know if this is a major problem or not but it drives my wife crazy.

  The drivers side front audio speaker is not working. I have checked the speaker itself is ok (swapping side to side). I have removed the radio and metered from the speaker plug from the back of the radio to the wires coming out of the door for the speakers. Apart from the fact that the colours do not match those of the Haynes manual, The passenger side rings through Ok but only one of the wires on the drivers side does - the violet wire is 'open circuit' - obviously the problem.

  Over the last few weeks, I've had an occasional problem where the illumination for the dashboard (indicator panel, clock and radio) didn't come on for the first few minutes and then worked okay. Since yesterday morning, it doesn't work at all. However some of the lights still work: dipped/full headlights, indicators, handbrake, electric windows, radio controls on steering wheel, ignition lights on dashboard, hazard lights.

  Only after I start the car does the lights come on and the rev counter starts to work. My trip meter and radio is also reset and I have to enter my radio code everytime I start the car. Is there another battery which powers the vehicle electronics when it is switched off as the main battery is okay but I get no power to the dash when the car is off.

  Hi My Astra (Hatch) has annoying "wind whistling" noise that comes from the back somewhere when you get to speeds above 40mph or so, its really annoying I cant see any obvoise gaps in the doors/rubber surrounds and all the windows are fully up, however when washing the car a slight dribble does sometimes (not all the time) come through the rear left handside door window but its fully wound up (manual not elec) Is this common, or does anyone have any ideas or had the same problem its more annoying more than anything - if you turn up the radio you cant hear it but sometimes i like to drive without the radio on and all i hear is this whistling coming from the back.   Does anyone know if the lighter socket on a Xantia is live when the ignition is off? I know the radio isn't. I go out and test it but the battery is barely powering the clock. I want to remove the battery to charge it, and I don't want the hassle of the Xantia reset the alarm palaver. I've tried to start it with a jump booster battery and it didn't do much good.

  This car has a screen displaying navigation / radio settings . It works well, but just now it has started to play up : After initially being well lit as usual at the start of each drive, the screen becomes blank after about 5 minutes, though the radio continues to operate normally, channels can be changed etc.

  I have a 1999 omega 2.5 v6 cdx estate. Recently I had to change the battery and once i had coded the radio I found that I couldnt code the cd changer.I have a Philips CCRT 700 with built in mobile phone. I followed the handbook instructions,ie switch on ign,hold cd button,switch on radio,wait 3-5 seconds,then enter the code.

  Why would I have to re-programme a plip anyway ? When I turn the ignition off a little red light next to the radio/cassette buttons starts flashing, what does this indicate ? There's also a small button on the side of the steering column, when I press and hold it in, another small red light to the left of the central air vents just above the radio/cassette, lights up.

  I was trying an upgraded stereo in my Octavia and discovered I suddenly had terrible MW/LW reception, the original Skoda radio has superb reception (I use LW whilst abroad!). Having investigated further I beleive the Skoda radio is feeding voltage back up the aerial lead to feed the aerial&lifier (Like TV masthead aerial).

  A friend of mine has a 10 year old Nissan Qashqai , where the radio / nav system has failed. He called the dealer for the cost of a replacement. A staggering £ 2500 . Just about the value of the car !

  Intially the electrics started to play up - lights stayed on , no display on the dash .It started up OK but when we tried again theres nothing happening at at all   . the only thing that works is the radio. Any ideas or pointers ?
