  • Tokyo and Toyota 19 Jan 2003 (Forum)
His company is the largest supplier to the UK but he specialises in nearly new RHD to New Zealand. Obviously most are RHD but there are a surprising large number of LHD (mostly prestige imports) available. And auction car prices are gob-smackingly cheap, even at current exchange rates (there is a forecast 25% Yen devaluation). We travelled out of endlessly sprawling Tokyo by shinkansen bullet train.

Tucker from the National Consumer Coalition said a safety argument can be made, "But you know what Ben Franklin said about those who are willing to give up liberty for safety - eventually [they're] going to have neither. I think that's something very important to look at." "And as far as safety goes, there are always unintended consequences where people who are so afraid of getting snapped by one of these red light cameras will stop short on a yellow light and the car behind them might not.

However to list cars I’d recommend is complicated by the fact that condition is of much greater importance than make and model at this money. I wouldn’t for example walk past a tidy one owner Renault Clio with history to get to a tatty Honda Jazz that hasn’t seen spanner’s in years. That said some are obviously better than others from the outset so if we assume similar condition, history and mileage a list of bargain bucket favourites does present itself.

Sorry about the length of this post, but I feel people ought to be aware of the confusion and the importance of making sure the correct oil is used in your car.
  • Volvo XC90 (II) D5 256 2016 - Volvo XC90 Diesel Significant Lack of Power & MPG 1 Jul 2025 (Forum)
I bought a remanufactured, guaranteed unit from the Netherlands for less than half this amount, but not much less. These seem common enough in UK but were not available readily here in France. Importing from UK is difficult.   I have had the car back from the third garage for a few days. It was with them for 5 weeks. New turbo fitted. Hours and hours of work was expended with other garages being consulted and another mechanic borrowed for 3 hours to inspect the car in case anything had been overlooked.
  • Peugeot 308 - Dealership potentially broke my car AGAIN - Advice 26 Jan 2023 (Forum)
I get a recall notice from Peugeot about the wet timing belt in Feb 2021 and I opt to put the car in for the complimentary check up. It's important to note I did not take it to a branch of the dealership I bought the car from as the closest Peugeot garage was another large dealership company, but they performed the checks and deemed the wet belt to be within spec.

Grey imports are still sold. There are some horrors including the Toyota Raum, Nissan Lafesta, although the Ist (pronounced Ust in NZ) to my eyes doesn't look to bad. • Private Cash for Public Roads 23 Mar 2012 (Forum)
There are just not enough public resources to provide the capacity we need and this offers the chance to make long-term plans for a utility every bit as important as things like water, power, electricity and the railways." But Friends of the Earth's head of campaigns Andrew Pendleton said: "Building and widening roads to tackle congestion is a dead-end policy that will simply lead to more traffic, more pollution - and even more gridlocked roads.
  • Land Rover Defender (1946 - ) - Land Rover or other 4X4 for a smallholding? 27 Sep 2009 (Forum)
So I see a few possibilities: 1) Keep the Almera, and get a commercialised 4X4 for agricultural and towing use -- something like a Mitsubishi Pajero/Shogun SWB, which I can import from Japan for about £4,000. Rip out the rear seats, blank out the windows, and I've got a low-cost towcar/van. 2) Keep the Almera, and get an old Land Rover for agricultural and towing use. A friend's son recommends a LR 90 200TDI, on the grounds that their lack of an ECU makes them simpler to maintain. 3) Sod the road tax, and get a LWB Pajero/Shogun or a Toyota Hilux Surf and get rid of the car 4) Compromise on a soft-roader like a Suzuki Grand Vitara (2.0 diesel is a more manageable ?
  • Recommend Me a Car 4 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I already know a lot about various cars, but it's the details you can't easily get from a spec sheet that I value the back roomer's help for-things like how good is the clutch, are the brakes decent, steering wheel mounted controls for stereo etc. Most important thing to me is a decent engine/gearbox with a smooth clutch and a car that overall feels 'fit' when driving. The terrible gearbox and horrible engine combined with a sticky/unsmooth clutch is really making driving a chore at the moment.
  • The Consequences of Speeding 6 Oct 2005 (Forum)
A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived. Life is precious. Handle with care. This is an important message; please pass it along to your friends. Drive safely and carefully. Remember, cars are not the only things recalled by their maker. Funny how you can send a thousand jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the sanctity of life, people think twice about sharing.
  • But for the Grace of God.... 6 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I will soon be 48 years old, and I have say that I have never eaten a tuna sandwich with side orders of reality and humility. These people lost everything except the pictures, important documents, and some clothes. Joe had managed to get their antique heirloom grandfathers clock into the bed of the truck and Anna got her china and silverware, but that was all. These wonderful people lost practically everything they owned and still would not accept any money for their food and drinks.
  • Formula One in London 15 Jul 2004 (Forum)
To plan for F1 cars to race through the streets of London is giving all the wrong messages. F1 needs to scale down it's activities and spending and allow the most important feature of the sport to dominate. That is; letting fantastically skilled human beings do their stuff in racing cars in front of an informed and appreciative audience at a dedicated race track with state of the art safety features.
  • Well ND started it on the Computer Forum 17 Apr 2004 (Forum)
At the back is a designated \"sweeper\" whose job it is to make sure everyone keeps up and to take care of a problem (flat tire, traffic violation etc). All have cellphones of course. especially important we all drink lots of H2O or Gatorade in this heat, particularly our girls with their small frames. We ride in staggered formation so we \"own\" the highway lanes we occupy and prevent PFD from crowding us.
  • A popular car in Iraq... 24 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Other issues to worry about? Petrol at 70 to 77 octane, leaded only of course, although 95 octane unleaded is now being imported in large quantities from Kuwait by the Americans. Ambient temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees C in high summer and high humidity in the south. The air-conditioning has to be on full-blast all the time as you do not want to be driving around with the windows open (if fact, windows that open are a costly option!).
  • BMW M3 CS - Multiple Faults from purchase, No Help from Dealer 15 Jun 2013 (Forum)
As I need my car on a daily basis I have had to get it repaired myself now so should I send them the invoice? (I think its important to note that now the caliper has been replaced its obvious that this has been partially faulty since purchase as the car now drives much better). Sorry for the lenghty post. I am fortunate enough to be able to afford the repiars (more cross about the lack of apology) but I feel this needs to be taken further and maybe make them think twice about treating another custmer like this......
  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 200k mile mark reached 14 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Performance wise the car is not fantastic but at the same time, it's no slouch. 0-60 comes up in just under 11 secs & I've seen 130 (speedo) on the autobahns on one of the many European trips it's been on. Overtakes (of which there have been many) are straight forward with sufficient torque at the important speeds to make things safe. Handling safe but not as dull as described by some. Coming back to the mpg issue if driven with economy in mind & on roads mainly outside of the south-east, the car has achieved over 1050 miles on a tank which is a little over 75mpg.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 ABS pump 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I duly booked in for front brake pads and also a new cam belt. I had been told several times by VW that it was important to have this done even though the car only has 35000 miles on the clock. I was warned of the potential cost I could incur if the belt went. I relented and agreed to have it done yesterday with the brake pads.

  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 04 Tourer diesel at 100k miles 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It is a March 04 Executive Tourer with Metallic paint and a space saver spare (the only two extras) - comes with leather , heated seats, CD changer etc. It is a company car so the CO2 figure of 153 was important as was the projected economy of 49mpg. My daily commute is 30m each way (A51/A38/A446) although I do about 5k a year on business which is generally motorway. I have3 never put opil in it and rarely check it as it stands on a slope at home.
