  • Cheaper petrol 30 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Shell garage on A417 near Fairford, Gloucestershire is down to 84.9 for unleaded and 90.9 for diesel. Seems nuts to put supermarket fuel in your tank when this Shell outlet can price match. Visit outside rush-hour when the queues have gone.
  • Fuels unto themselves 5 Oct 2011 (Ask HJ)
In your column on Saturday, October 8th you made mention of supermarket petrol. What is wrong with it? And is diesel affected as well?

  • which fuel (petrol) 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
petrol stations - and the misfire never recurred. I'm sure it's fine to use from time to time, but since then I would no longer use supermarket fuel ALL the time. In any case, the price advantage seems much lower nowadays than it used to be.
  • Honda Civic - B10 Diesel 2 Sep 2022 (Forum)
I have read a lot about B10 Petrol recently and the possible issues surrounding this. My Honda Civic is the 1.6 Diesel version and I have been filling it with fuel from supermarkets, all of which have shown the fuel as B7 Grade. Today, however, I was passing a BP garage where the cost was the lowest in the area so went in to fill up. I was surprised to see that the standard fuel was shown as B10 whilst the Super grade was B7.
  • New(ish) Petrol 7 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Currently I travel a little further to fill up on Optimax but would be grateful of advice if anyone knows anything. Please do not give advice on: all fuels are the same and I should just use supermarket petrol - you will sound like my father-in-law - and he only half fills his car because a full tank weighs more and reduces his fuel consumption !!!!
  • Luxury German Make / 4 seat cabriolet - Breakdown 1 hour/ 50 miles after purchase 20 Oct 2013 (Forum)
The main dealer believe the problem is contaminated fuel, but can not confirm whether this was the small amount of fuel in the car when purchased or the fuel I put in immediately after purchase (I put in the correct fuel and the receipt to prove it).   They now say it is not a warranty issue due to it being a result of outside interference and so want to charge me to get the car back (saying all they want to do is repair the car and get the money, washing their hands of the issue) .
  • Fuel quality - I still don't get it......... 16 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I often read in threads on here, from HJ himself (I think) and on French car websites this business about making sure you use 'quality fuel' ( latest one was a French car website blaming TDCi failures on poor-quality supermarket fuel ). Yet people ' in the know' seem to say the fuel all comes from the same refineries and all meets the 'required standards' (I mean, this isn't Cambodia is it ??)

  • Petrol and Diesel Prices 5 Jul 2023 (Forum)
The supermarkets in particular seem to work as a cartel with no real differences in their prices and priced in an area not particularly worried about independent retailers.  They know that store visitors will probably buy their fuel so they will get a good market share whatever.
  • Fuel, Ordinary and Super - MGZS 2017 13 Sep 2019 (Forum)
T'other day, was away from home and fuel light came on, (Nothing unusual there then) but was near a certain supermarket selling fuel, and offer was spend £60 and get 10p off a litre, so decided to fill up with Momentum on the spur of the moment.
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 99 2.0 HDi Auto Diagnosis Light 10 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I am getting this checked out on thursday at a local citroen specialist - £25+vat for the diagnostic - but was wondering if anybody had had the same sort of problem and what maybe the problem could be. I don't know if its a co-incidence but I had filled up at a supermarket about 20 mins before the AD light came on. I have read that supermarket fuels are not as good - is this true or fuel snobbery? I am not that bothered about the car being in limp mode but am towing a caravan in about 8 weeks and wouldn't mind having the power there for that.

stood for 2 weeks in the snow, started first time. Thirty miles later after much needed supermarket shop, car starts then immediately cuts out. Many tries later it'll start but so frustrating. Seems like no fuel getting through . Battery has been checked and is fine.  advice appreciated.
