  Having followed the oil change / VAG long life service threads here for a while now I have to say I'm torn between sticking to the long life regime on my Audi Tdi which is saying that the first service will be due at 19,000 and getting intermediate oil changes at a cost of £100 ish (it needs 8+ litres).

  AtsS5jW8ljPvjJNZAejWQ0PcBnLv5w">it suggests that for my engine (K10C) that the light isn't linked to time/mileage but is dependent on oil condition - meaning that continuing to drive it could potentially cause damage. The car has done just over 1500 miles. Is a car requiring an oil change after 3 months reasonable? Should I insist the garage change the oil if they do just try to reset the indicator when I take it in?

  i have a 97 vw passat.i keep getting oil warning lamp going off after the engine is warm but when checked there is enough oil on the gauge.i have changed the oil switch and even sent to vw main dealer but nothing was found.after an oil change,i dont get this but after 1 month it will start again.can anyone help.

  which oil at a loss to what oil to use in a ford maverick 2.4 petrol injection engine.i am about to do an oil and filter change hand book says 10/30 or 10/40 halfords say 5/30 and 10/40 for a terrano which has the same engine as far as i know. does it matter if i use a conventional oil or a synthetic oil. as i dont know what is in it at the moment.or does it not matter if i am changing the oil. many thanks, rob

  My main question is, what oil should I use? Can I use the STP treatment and still expect the oil to lubricate the engine for 120 odd miles? Or should I have an oil change done at one of the quick fit places and then change again when I get home?

  I would very much like to source the tool to remove the oil filter cartridge in order to change the oil myself and impose intermediate changes of approx 5K mile intervals. If anyone has a contact address for locating a tool I would very much appreciate hearing from them.

  Quick straw poll please - given fixed budget and a 13-year old (1.6 Nissan petrol) engine that has clocked well in excess of 100K would you think it better to make frequent changes of cheap oil or less-frequent changes of good oil?

  He has a 1986 BMW K100 motorbike (dry clutch like a car) which he purchased second hand 3 years ago, to this day he has not changed the oil, the seller told him that it was fully synthetic and good for 10k miles. As my friend has yet to do 10k he reckons the oil does not need changing. I say it does, and this should be at least once per year.

  At the last oil change (approximately 3 months ago) I put Magnatec oil in and also gave my 1.9TD Xsara a good shot of Redex diesel treatment. Along with making it run quieter, these two combined took me from getting approximately 400 miles from a tank to over 500... quite a substantial improvement!

  I know this sounds similar to another topic still on this page, there amongst other views, Andy in Germany was opining that changing the filter was more important than the oil. Conversely, the previous time this topic was aired a couple of Backroomers suggested it might be good enough to change the filter every *other* oilchange.

  Hi, Wife has just reported that a message has just come up on the dash saying 'oil maintenance required'. The oil level is fine and it was changed in 2013. Its not done a great deal of mileage since it was changed. Do i need to change it or do i take it for a run to get the oil hot and burn off some crud from it.

  Booked 309 in for full service Premier Plus or whatevr which involves fuel filetr and gearbox oil Its a 1993 model which has a sealed gearbox So when they suggest gearbox oil change are they after more money; should I refuse the gearbox oil change? Or will they actually do it? Excuse the typing.

  Mercedes-Benz recommends that the automatic transmission oil and filter are changed once at 37,500 miles on the C 220 CDI Sport Coupe.  Cost about £220.  It seems very early  in a car's life to carry out such a change.  Is it really necessary and what is/are the reason(s) for this?
