Less is More

I write this from India where one experiences severe traffic conditions, kamikaze drivers, stop-start traffic, heat, dust, potholes. Only the tough survive!

I need to replace my Skoda Octavia 1.8T vRs which was getting temperamental and I needed to carry my diagnostic kit with me to reset error codes that kept cropping up.

I was all set on buying a Yeti but although a competent vehicle, it did not "jump up and kiss me" since it was a little noisy and stiff. I test drove a Jetta DSG and like the handling, space. The dashboard was spa*** compared to its competitors out here (Cruze, Octavia, Corolla) but my gut feel was that the inherent strengths would shine through.

Although a little clunky at low speeds, it handles high speeds on rough roads with aplomb. I have rarely sc***ed the undersides unless fully laden on the sharp speedbreakers that happen at random. It absorbs bumps etc without a murmur.

I must admit its solid build is impressive, a motorbike rider fell off his bike which spun into the bumper, with the exception of a grill that popped out and a minor scratch, it was fine. A m**** left a pile of stones in the middle of the road which damamged the ABS wiring and an alloy as well as some of the plastic shields underneath. The car continued another 500km without a murmur although the dealer took 3 month to fix a 3 day job (I ensured that the dealer no longer exists!). It is cheaper than my Suzuki Swift to run.

The only complaint was a weak AC which got resolved during its first service .VW claim to have merely changed the filter but judging from that the car was sent to the main service cente where major jobs were done, I suspect otherwise. The rear ABS sensor embedded in the wheel bearing failed and was replaced under warranty.

After the high incidence of DSG failures in India (every Superb has been off the road out here), I opted for a manual. The gearshift is positive and precise.

It may not be that well equipped (rivals have climate control, bluetoooth, sunroof) but it handles much better that its peers, most of my friends are prising the keys off me most of the time.

The solid build (compared to an MQB Octavia) and its durability made it a good choice. It is not the most exciting car that I have owned (Peugeot 309GTI and a Honda Vtec own that crown) but it is a very competent choice.

Fuel consumption might look low but thats what stop/start traffic does to you.

The Jetta has completed 54000km on rough Indian roads. Except for normal servicing, the car needed a new waterpump (endemic for Passats, Yeti's and Superbs in India) and front control arm bushes (understandable).

The last service saw it get the dieselgate remap. Performance is slightly blunt and the fuel consumption is up 5%. The engine idels at a high 900RPM making the clutch a little stiffer. Might consider a performance remap shortly.

All in all, I am pleased with the Jetta and will keep it till around 80000km.

It has been reliable but got expensive. Never bothered with the remap. Following issues did happen
AC Compressor valve failed at 46k - Fortunately the valve was a separate component so replaced cheaply
Around 60000km - the EGR valve failed
Around 77000km, the timing belt was changed along with water pump where a small leak was discovered. The roof headlining collapsed - common Jetta/BMW problem in the Indian heat. Otherwise, it was ran sweet as a nut. I changed the windscreen as it was pitted and repainted the alloys which were getting corroded. The clutch plate was changed as it was approaching end of life.

Considered getting a used BMW 3 diesel but they sounded like tractors and handling prowess apart, there was not much to upgrade to. I sold it as I got a good price and the new buyer drove 3000km to North West India and back in a week with no issue. I understand he changed the engine mounts and front lower arms.

It served me and never let me down. Replaced by an Audi Q3 - not as engaging but much nicer interior and quality inside.
