Overall reliability

A very practical car which is very well equipped and a pleasure to drive

I bought my 17 plate Carens 2 1.7CRDI in Jan 2018. It was 6 months old with 3,800m on and a very good buy at £15,000. I had owned a 58 plate Carens 2.0CRDI for over 6 years which was very good and reliable and simply wanted an upgrade. The new car is so much nicer. I debated buying a car up to 3 to 4 years old but decided that the saving in purchase price was not worth it. I intend to keep the car for many years and the annual cost is likely to be no more expensive and the facelifted model from March 2017 benefits from some changes, mainly the 7" touchscreen with DAB radio, Sat Nav, reversing camera and bluetooth connectivity as standard (previous version had Bluetooth I know). Ok so the roadtax has gone up from £20 or £30 to £140/yr now but it is worth it.

I have just driven 1,000 miles in it so far but am very, very pleased with it. It is quiet and relaxed and a pleasure to drive. It is well equipped and seems very well built. We also own a 15 plate Toyota Rav4 which is excellent, you can't beat Toyota for reliability but I don't like the Verso hence another Carens. I have also owned a few Zafira's and a Ford S Max before so am used to MPV's. My only gripe is the fuel consumption is higher than hoped so far. The trip computer has returned 39.5 and 41.0 mpg but I always calculate each trip and actual figures were 46 and 48.5 approx. It is the middle of winter and has been cold so I expect to get around 50 mpg out of it on average in the warmer weather and maybe a little more. I have driven carefully as the boy racer days are over.

Actually, I really don't like the look of the fog light surrounds on this face-lifted model and think the previous version 2013-16 looked nicer but I am very happy that I went for the newer version, when you are driving it the feeling is great and I can't see the front end whilst driving. I think these are a really underrated car but as you will see from the owner reviews the people who buy them really like them.
