A bit rough around the edges

I leased this car as I left the company I worked for to stat my own business, it ticked all the boxes, big boot, reasonable economy & priced well below the equivalents.

My previous vehicles were a BMW 318d Tourer & Audi A4 Avant, both excellent vehicles and obviously cost a lot more then the i40, so I did not expect miracles.

Problem is, the issues are quite significant at least to me as I spend 2-3 hrs per day in the car.

Parking sensors are really annoying & often go off in slow moving traffic, despite the nearest car being 10 foot away. They scream their heads off whether you have the car in reverse or not & have what is obviously an added on switch to disable them. Most cars enable the beeps when you engage reverse or press a button, the Hyundai is the opposite, you need to press a button to switch them off. I have lost count of the number of times I've calmly gotten into the car when parked and then being surprised by the high pitched, loud beep as soon as I turn the key - without the engine on...

The car achieves nowhere near the quoted mpg, I have no idea where other owners are getting their figures from or if they are convincing themselves. I base mine on tank to tank fill up figures so it is only getting more accurate over time. In 9500 miles, I have never got over 50mpg. The car computer claims 47mpg but averages 44mpg. I have tried taking an entire tank really slow, gently, careful but on fill up still only got 49mpg - car was claiming 53mpg.
Mind you, the lower cost per month compared to getting a BMW - over £100 less at last quote - makes up for a lot of mpg.

Other minor gripes - bluetooth connection is really quiet and the stereo volume doesn't reset when you get out. The next time you get in, it takes too long to find the bluetooth device & switches to radio, with the volume at 75% plus + blows you out of the car. This is at the same time as the parking sensors screaming at you - very annoying & often embarrassing.

On the plus side - ride is comfortable if not exciting, the engine is pokey enough to see off the boy racers with 10 year old hatch backs from the traffic lights & the interior is huge, as is the boot. I carry a lot of kit and where the Audi was a bit full, I can just launch everything into the i40 & still fit the weekly shopping in without a problem.

Sat nave seems Ok but lacks full post code coverage & I can't find a way to update it myself - will have to speak to the dealer about this. I have full TomTom on my phone anyway so this isn't an issue for me. Voice controls are typical - hit and miss - but Ive yet to find a car that isn't - it is Ok for calls but not good at taking addresses.

Overall, good value for money but with a few software / sensor tweaks, they could have had a much better vehicle for very little extra cost.
