Honda CR-V (2012 - 2018)
2.0i VTEC SE Plus Navi 5dr
Great!
I bought the late-model 2018 Honda CR-V (Mk 4) because it has a naturally aspirated Honda 2.0L petrol engine. It is a tried and tested engine. Most new cars are now hybrid or have very small turbocharged engines, which means the cars are heavier and there are more things that can potentially go wrong. I wanted a drama-free car. So far the car has been great.
The car is comfortable and easy to drive, and it works well on motorways.
Sadly, cars these days are not as good as those made in the late 1990s. Modern cars are heavier and run on bigger tyres.
I use the CR-V mostly use it in city driving and it performs well, however, I struggle with parking, as spaces feel tight. Cars are getting bigger. The parking sensors are brilliant. The parking camera is great in daylight, but useless at night. The MPG has taken a hit due to city centre driving. They reduced the speed to 20mph! (I have set a warning to remind me not to go over).
Seats – I love the way the rear seats fold down flat.
Boot – The boot is big enough to carry my folding bicycles. It’s great for loading IKEA furniture.
Audio – The audio system works well. The radio is good and I would rate it 8/10. I am still waiting to find a car to find better audio.
Infotainment – I felt the infotainment system was a bit out of date on first use. I tried several hire cars with newer Android Auto but still came back to the Honda CR-V and think it is better overall. I mainly use my phone for Google maps and music.
Sat Nav – The built-in navigation works, but it needs a map update. Entering the address takes too long.
Real buttons – The car has real physical buttons for most controls. The steering wheel has volume controls and I prefer a proper knob for the volume.
Aside from struggling to park in tight parking spaces, one thing that annoys me is that the rear windscreen is tinted black. At dusk and night it can be difficult to see what is behind the car. I had the auto-dimming mirrors. The rear passengers windows are tinted, which is good from a security point of view.
Fun to drive – I am still on the search for a car that is fun to drive on country and mountain roads. The CR-V is great, but cars are heavier these days and have bigger tyres, which affects the driving feel.
However, overall the CR-V is a good car. No hesitation in recommending it.
