New 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan: Prices, specs and release date

  • New Volkswagen Tiguan is latest version of world’s best-selling VW
  • Third-generation model has sophisticated new interior and infotainment systems
  • Wide range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines – and no EVs
  • Deliveries begin in early 2024 with prices starting at £34,000

The new Volkswagen Tiguan arrives in early 2024 charged with continuing the considerable success of the current model – the best-selling VW in the world. As such, the new Volkswagen Tiguan is an expertly-honed evolution of the popular family SUV, rather than a radical revolution.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has new features including a full-width LED light bar at the front, plus vivid HD matrix LED headlights. The revolution for the new Volkswagen Tiguan comes inside, with a sophisticated infotainment system including a central touchscreen of up to 15.0 inches and novel multifunction dial with built-in OLED display.

The engine line-up for the new Volkswagen Tiguan includes petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid choices, but Volkswagen will not offer a fully electric model. The existing Volkswagen ID.4 serves that role.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will continue to be a formidable rival to models such as the Ford Kuga, Nissan Qashqai, Honda CR-V, Skoda Kodiaq, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Volvo XC40, Renault Austral and Peugeot 3008. It will also challenge premium alternatives such as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

New 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan prices and release date

Ordering for the new Volkswagen Tiguan is now open in the UK. First deliveries are expected in spring 2024.

Prices for the new Volkswagen Tiguan start from £34,060. That buys you an entry-level Tiguan 1.5 TSI 130, and even this model comes with a standard seven-speed DSG automatic – the new Volkswagen Tiguan is not available with a manual gearbox.

Other new Volkswagen Tiguan versions comprise Life, Elegance and R-Line models. The new Volkswagen Tiguan Life 1.5 TSI 130 is expected to be a popular version, with prices from £35,905.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan is still available as a diesel, with the Tiguan Life 2.0 TDI 150 costing from £37,905. Plug-in hybrid versions, called eHybrid, will be released later in 2024.

New 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan styling, interior and technology

The new Volkswagen Tiguan’s styling is an evolution of today's popular model, with a bolder and more curvaceous profile that contrasts with the current car's sharper, blockier look. Details are more expressive – particularly the contrast black detailing in the front bumper of R-Line models – and it's more aerodynamic, which will improve fuel economy.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a full-width LED light bar at the front. This is similar to other new Volkswagens. It will also offer optional HD matrix headlights, called IQ.Light HD. These high-end headlights are already used in the premium Volkswagen Touareg.

The intelligent HD matrix headlights for the new Volkswagen Tiguan have 19,200 LEDs on each side and have a high-performance main beam with a range of 500 metres. Features include a bright light ‘carpet’ that follows the lane the new Volkswagen Tiguan is driving in, and glare-free high beam.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a full-width horizontal LED strip at the rear, plus 'Tiguan' lettering on the tailgate, for a premium look.

Inside, the new Volkswagen Tiguan has an all-new cockpit design and latest-generation infotainment. It’s been developed in response to feedback from Volkswagen customers, and the firm promises it is “clear and self-explanatory”.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan’s infotainment system is all-new. The standard screen measures 12.9 inches, with higher-spec models featuring a 15.0-inch screen. The touchscreen interface has been redesigned so it’s clearer and easier to use. There are now two touch bars at the top and bottom of the screen, to which favourite direct-access functions can be assigned.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan also has physical touch sliders at the bottom, similar to the Volkswagen ID.3 – but these are now illuminated so they are easier to use at night. There are physical buttons on the steering wheel too, rather than touch-sensitive controls.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has improved digital instruments, which are larger than the Digital Cockpit setup of today’s model. There are four different ‘views’ – Classic, Progressive, Navigation and R-Line. The digital instruments have a new surface coating that reduces glare. This means it’s now set into the dashboard like a screen, with no need for an overhang at the top to provide shade.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will offer ergoActive seats, with a 10-chamber pneumatic pressure point massage function. They will be available with 14-way electric adjustment and air conditioning functionality. Heating and cooling can be set to automatically turn on when a predefined outside temperature is reached.

In the centre console of the new Volkswagen Tiguan is a novel multifunction driving experience switch, with integrated OLED display. Because this rotary dial has its own mini screen, it can control various aspects simply by pressing it to toggle through different settings.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a larger, more comfortable and higher quality interior, promises VW. Noise levels are similar to those in cars from the larger premium sector, enhanced further by optional acoustic double glazing. Roominess is improved, with 9mm more headroom in the front and 10mm more headroom in the rear.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has a super-spacious 648-litre boot. This is 33 litres larger than the current model. This is despite overall length only growing 32mm to 4551mm. The new Volkswagen Tiguan has the same 1939mm width as today’s car, and the same 2681mm wheelbase.

New 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan engines, performance and fuel economy

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will offer a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. There will not be a pure electric new Volkswagen Tiguan, as this role is served by the Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5.

The most affordable new Volkswagen Tiguan engines will be the TSI petrol and TDI diesels. The 150ps 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine is likely to be the core motor, with 115ps and 150ps 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesels offering potential average fuel economy of over 60mpg.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will be available with more efficient eTSI mild hybrid turbo petrol engines. In the closely-related Volkswagen Golf, the 1.5-litre eTSI engine is paired with a DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox, and averages over 51mpg.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will also come with eHybrid plug-in hybrid powertrains. There will be two versions, producing 204ps and 272ps. A large battery means the pure electric range will range from 55 miles to almost 75 miles. These impressive figures mean the pure electric potential of the new Volkswagen Tiguan in daily driving will be considerable.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid plug-in hybrid batteries will, for the first time, offer DC rapid charging capability. This means they will be able to use public rapid chargers for speedy top-ups in just a few minutes. The AC charging speed, when using home wall boxes, will be faster too.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will come with front-wheel drive as standard. More powerful versions will offer all-wheel drive. The new Volkswagen Tiguan is based on an evolution of the current model’s platform, called MQB evo. Using this ‘modular transverse matrix’ brings economies of scale that helps keep prices affordable.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan also introduces a new adaptive chassis system, called DCC Pro. This optional system has two-valve dampers that can be configured from soft to sporty through a Vehicle Dynamics Manager. Suspension is MacPherson strut at the front with a four-link axle at the rear.

What should we replace our Volkswagen Golf with?

What is the most efficient, comfortable and fairly stylish car you would recommend to replace our ageing but otherwise excellent 2015 Golf 2.0 TDI BlueMotion. We like the size, the fuel economy, it’s not too sluggish, but cannot find anything that matches this good all-rounder. Looking at up to £25,000 including the trade in of our Golf.
How about a Toyota Corolla? It looks fairly stylish in GR Sport trim and it'll be very cheap to run, thanks to Toyota's exceptional reliability record and efficient hybrid powertrains. A Mazda 3 is another stylish hatch although it's only available with mild-hybrid power so won't be as frugal as the Corolla. Otherwise, you could consider family SUVs like the Volkswagen Tiguan.
