It may not be outstanding in any one area but according to the tests I've seen, it achieves an all-round high standard so that for many people it may be all the car they ever need. And Jamie's point about the Focus in Happy Blue's thread applies equally to the Golf.
At least the judgements are made on more rational grounds than sometimes they used to be. In 1978 the Chrysler Horizon won simply because the top model - which wasn't available in the UK - had a trip computer, said to be the first on a mass-produced car.
I bought a new Horizon when they first came out, as it seemed to have more room for the family than the Golf (Mark 1) and was a bit cheaper. I realised fairly soon that I should have had the Golf and made the family travel lighter.
