New car for new family - Happy Blue!

I am about to promote my assistant and as part of his improved package he will be getting a company car. In March his wife will produce their first child and I expect that within two or three years child #2 will arrive. The new father suffers from a bit of bad back.

I want him to have built in SatNav and Bluetooth and understandably he wants a car with a higher ride height to aid his back when taking the child in and out of the car. He will do about 12,000 - 15,000 miles each year with at least one motorway round trip of about 450 miles each month.

We have been reviewing various cars, analysing CO2 emissions, internal space, leasing costs etc etc and we seem to have come up with the Nissan Qashqai N-Tec with the 1.6DCi engine with Start/Stop as the best option to maximise internal space and minimise company car tax. The lease charges do not seem to be unreasonable and we have agreed that anything above a certain figure comes out of his salary.

Does anyone have any better suggestions?

Possibly a 2WD 1.6 petrol version of the Mitsubishi ASX - not sure about all the gizmos you spoke of. You may want to consider petrol engined cars [10-15% cheaper to buy - not sure about lease hire though] generally given the mileage (unless you didn't include private miles in your estimation [total over 20k at least], then definitely go for a diesel) and they are ofetn cheaper to tax than diesels if they aren't too big.

The Skoda Yeti seems very well regarded, if you think the looks are acceptable (a sort of "marmite" looking car - you either love it or hate it). Not cheap any more, now that Skoda's aren't a 1980's joke any longer.

Lots of MPVs/4x4's (2WD versions more for you) out there really - both have a look at HJ's review section - its quite comprehensive. I hate to say it, but also try the "Find a Car" part of the "Parkers" website to narrow down the cars first (saves you having to trawl through them all). Make sure you don't get one with bling-bling (anything under ***/50 ratio or over 17in) wheels/tyres, because they'll do your back in for anyone with inherant problems in that regard.

It might be worth seeing which manufacturers have a dealership (for servicing/repairs) within reasonable distance of your office or you colleague's home, for convenience sake, though don't let it put you off any make, especially if you really want one car.

Best of luck.

Let the employee choose - they'll have to pay the tax as benefit-in-kind so it should be their choice, not yours.

Set the parameters, like maximum leasing and fuel cost, but leave the rest to them.

The term "user-chooser" comes to mind.

Are company cars still cost effective? Maybe an allowance would suit you and your employee better. It means you don't have to jump through BiK loops either.

I'd imagine that Happy Blue and his assistant have been working this out together and agreed on the type of package. The Qashqai sounds the right sort of car, but with a bad back he should test drive a shortlist of cars within the leasing budget and make sure he's comfortable.

The Yeti, C-Max, Verso and Mitsubishi ASX could all be contenders, even the Zafira if he regards a car as just something to get from A to B. The VW Touran might be more expensive to buy outright, but as it holds its value well there might be a good leasing deal.

Thanks Avant. We have indeed been looking at this together and the point is that he dispenses wth his car allowance, but gains a brand new car that suits his new status as father. The tax implications are modest and worthwhile to him.

I had not thought of the ASX nor indeed the Yeti or the Touran. He is not a car buff like us here, but seems to know what he doesn't want and he is not bothered about 'branding'. It is a pity the ix35 doesn't suit him as there is a dealer on the way into our office, but I am giving him a little bit of free rein.

Will let you know how we get on. We know we have to wait until January to get the prices for leasing for the date when he wants the car.

Sorry-wasn't meaning to be contrarian or patronising. It's just that a lot of people are jumping the other way.
