Jaguar F type - Jaguar F Type's pram hood - Hill Special

Why has the new jaguar F Type got a perambulator's hood.

So sad to see that they have not gone for a folding metal roof which are so much better than old pram hoods.

Merc, Audi, Beemer and many others, even the MX5 and Renault have folding tin tops.

Do not undersatnd why Jaguar have stook with the hood off an old pram !

Because a folding metal roof is one thing you can't buy in - it has to be fully developed in-house and is a highly complex assembly which is difficult to get right.

Preparing to take cover, my observations are that JLR are strong on marketing ability and weak on any engineering design they can't purchase. I wish them luck with their new venture.

Some revised models are ditching the folding tin top and going back to fabric.

The folding metal roofs look awful, weigh a lot (in addition to the usual carbriolet strengthening), and take up virtually all the boot space. If you're going to haver a mid-life crisis and get a convertible, at least do it properly and go fabric!

And then put a hard-top on for winter !!

All to do with weight reduction. Steel and glass roofs are heavy and add weight. Peugeot are supposed to be returning to fabric roofs for the 208cc
