Jaguar Classics - Tyres, what does "Competition" on sidewall mean? - AvalonChris

Just bought a kit car and it comes with 4 good tyres but all have the word 'competition' on the sidewall, does anyone know if this makes them illegal for street use?

Tyres are: Englebert by Michelin, and wording is "6.50/16 Competition P".

Tried my local tyre garage and I they weren't sure.

Cheers

I suggest you check with Michelin to ensure they are road legal.

All tyre currently sold for road use must have an "E" mark(or "e") on them.Could be old-they-re cross-ply!-but not necessarily. The "E" signifies EU approval.

When I was kit car racing (road going class) the tyre to have was a soft compound cross ply one. They were not "E" marked simply because they did not "E" mark cross plys back in 1995. They were "DOT" marked though which did mean they were road legal. The other thing is the wording competition", that on its own does not mean they are illegal for road use. If it said "for racing purposes only" or "not for highway use" that would be different.

DOT means road legal-in the USA!

super helpful, thanks. I think they are cross plys and because of the type of car its likely they didnt get much use, so could be older tyres.

Good idea, I'll try Michelin. Demon Tweeks is on my list to call, they have always been helpful when I was running a beach buggy.
