The hot news from MG is that you can now buy a brand new MGF 'on the road' for just £15,500. It's not a stripped-out version either. For your £15,500 you get power steering, alloy wheels, a proper alarm-immobiliser, electric windows, a peppy and economical 112bhp 1.6 twin-cam engine and the big advantage of low Group 11 insurance.

Is their any possibility that the Chinese have got the car sorted ? Has the head gasket been modified ?

Is it worth buying at this price .

Interesting ,let's hope the MGF is a success ,I think their could be buyers for it.

I'm not sure their will be be many buyers for the MG hatchbacks ,that's a crowded market ,if they don't offer quality/image .That only leaves price ,can they compete with Kia and Hyundai as a value brand .?

Living in Birmingham, and having been involved in managing aspects of the redundancy exercise put in place by Central Government in 2004 for Rover, I have been following articles on ARonline over the past couple of years. Marketing seems to be the main issue with MG. Basically there isn't much, if any!

As regards the MG6, I think they registered somethng like 7 in October last year. However, they have since signed up at least one of the major car hire companies with the MG6, and have also commited to entering the BTCC. So that should start raising the profile.

I also have a number of motoring magazines (Autocar, Auto Express, Top Gear, sometimes What Car) every week/month, I cannot recall seeing any adverts for the MG6.

How many MG dealers/service agents are there in UK? I know it is a lot more money but it is a lot more car - I'd rather have an MX5

I followed an MG6 last week.

First I have ever seen.

I was .. well.. underwhelmed...

I always liked the styling of the MGF and thought the mid engine packaging was neat. I was also a fan of the K Series engine, which for some reason seems to get a lot of stick. When this engine appeared, it was quite advanced for the period and in 1.6 form I thought it was a gem. One of the nicest engines I have ever had in a car. Unfortunately, it seems that the MGF had its fair share of problems but maybe they can sort them out. The one Rover I have owned was bought because the overall package was hard to beat. I would love to see a similar situation again.

There's a chap at my local branch of the MGOC who knows all things about MG,he has two MGs; one an immaculate 1940s MGTF and the other a Chinese built TF which he's had for about a year: he rates it very good.

I suspect that he (the chap from MGOC) is also very biased...For example, I'm fond of my old polo but to most people it is; slow, noisy, unrefined, basic, small. They will however acknowledge that it is both reliable and cheap. A £15,000 MGF is not cheap and reliability is not yet proven.

Any car which suffers from designed in overheating problems is neither good nor desirable.

Moist manufacturers sorted those issues out half a century ago. :-)

The MG was introduced back in about 1995 from memory. At that time it was not as desirable as an MX5. It was based on parts from the Rover parts bin which included Metro subframes and suspension plus an engine that suffered more leaks than a goverment department.

Over time they "improved" it, the appearance was updated and the gas suspension replaced with proper springs but during the same period Mazda brought out 2 brand new MX5's plus numerous other developments.

I have seen brand new Mazda MX5 1.8's advertised at under £15,000, you would have to be clinically insane to spend over £15,000 on a Chinese MGF that has neither the looks, reliability, dealer network or resale demand.

K series wasn't a bad design, but two main things led to the reputation for head gasket failure. The bean counters productionizing it and including plastic dowels as head locators, and the fact there is not a lot of coolant, so it's more sensitive to running low.

The early 1.4 I had was fine.

Moist ! Manufacturers ,overheating problems ,I hope that's an intended pun.

Thunderbird ,when the MGF was first introduced it was far more desirable than the mx5 .rover dealers had sold their initial allocation 12 months before the cars release date ,shortly after the release date there was a two year waiting list .i got my order in very early ,and sold the car for £600 over list by advertising it in the Sunday times .

Sadly once potential buyers released what problems the car had ,interest
disappeared ,and orders were cancelled .

Just thinking about rover ,British leyland etc ,they seemed to specialise in disasters like the MGF .

For example the maxi ,fantastic use of space ,great concept ,but so badly made ,then the allegro with the quartic steering wheel ,where was the attraction for a buyer in that ,
So many more great cars but badly built and marketed .

"...parts from the Rover parts bin which included Metro subframes and suspension..."

Nothing wrong with going to the parts bin when the results are nigh-on perfect. A colleague remarked that "it's like someone's put rails all over Britain for MGFs to run on".

When they first came out, Autocar took one to Thruxton (IIRC) and put it up against a Golf VR6. The Golf was quicker on the straight, the "F" was 3 seconds a lap faster round the circuit(!) They closed that article by pointing out that the very reason that hot hatches had taken over from sports cars had just been rendered moot. It held the crown for handling until the Lotus Elise tipped up a while later (and that was a close call).

I guess some people will argue that sales don't count but from a little research I have found the following info.

The 900,000th MX5 rolled off the production line in February 2011. Not been possible to find a total production figure for the MGF but in the best year it looks like 14,000 (some years way less) thus for the 10years it was manufactured the max would have been 140,000, probably nearer 100,000 looking at some years figures. That would be a ratio of 9 to 1.

Here are a few comments I found comparing the MX5 to the MGTF when it was relaunched by Nanjing.

Parkers gave the car 2.5/5 and said its pros were "Styling, handling and brand heritage" and cons were "Dated interior, patchy build quality and poor reliability."

WhatCar? gave it 2/5 saying its pros were that it's "pretty and affordable" but its cons were "The driving position and steering are not what you'd expect in such a sporty car."

AutoExpress reviewed it after Nanjiing took over and also had a 2/5 verdict, liking how it's "well equipped and compact" but disliking how it was priced more expensive than a basic Mazda MX5, has "barely changed since 1995 and can be mistaken for a much older vehicle" and also commenting on its cramped interior.

Would I buy an MG or an MX5, don't think I need to answer that.
