Today I noticed that the ambient temperature is about 0C, and the pressure is 1040mbar.

The rated horsepower of engines are corrected to 20C and 1010mbar (DIN)

So that means that a typical naturally aspirated petrol engine should have about be capable of making about 7% more power simply from the increase in air density alone. Hooray!

Thats funny i specifically made a mental note about how sluggish my car felt this morning (Astra SXI)

Most - Extra power day - unthrottled

How odd. Initially with a cold engine, mine was lethargic, but warmed up I swear that it felt more sprightly!

Don't modern ECU's make temp and air pressure a level playing field these days ?

Not that a understand any of the above !

Most - Extra power day - unthrottled

Sometimes. My brother notices his boost gauge won't rise as high in the cold as the ECU closes the throttle to limit total airflow.

Happily the ECU has no control over the throttle in my car, and is forced to supply fuel to meet the air demand!

More like 7C and 1036mb here...

The colder temperatures have a negative impact on friction throughout the car, plus winter fuel doesn't give as much mpg as summer fuel, so if there is any bhp/torque gain they are more than offset by other factors. Also colder air within an engine cylinder requires more heat energy to heat it up which then draws energy away from the amount of energy actually transmitted onto the road and hence motion.

Mike-I never claimed the power was free. You have to burn more fuel! Most people get poorer economy in cold weather than the summer.

The difference in calorific value between summer and winter fuel isn't as big as people think.

The colder temperatures have a negative impact on friction throughout the car,

??

Not once the engine and gearbox are up to operating temperature.

Also colder air within an engine cylinder requires more heat energy to heat it up which then draws energy away from the amount of energy actually transmitted onto the road and hence motion

???

Don't actually understand what this paragraph is trying to say!

Now this really is dull, even for unthrottled.

I'd like to think my engine is so large and wonderful that it'd be impossible to improve on perfection.

Most - Extra power day - unthrottled

Yes, you've got more ponies to play with. But I'm enjoying my extra 'free' ones!

Most - Extra power day - jamie745

But if you've got extra free ones then surely so have i, meaning my car is still faster than yours.

Most - Extra power day - unthrottled

Yes.

But I thought you had too much to begin with!

Most - Extra power day - jamie745

How is it too much? I think its a perfectly reasonable amount.

The Berlingslow felt a little peppier once it had warmed up.

But as diesels are indeed 'unthrottled' someone will probably tell me it was in my head...

The air your car is trying to push aside is also denser. What effect does that have?

Most - Extra power day - unthrottled

It pushes your economy down-but your acceleration should be a little sharper. I find mine noticeably better. Went for a hard run to celebrate!

Extra power and acceleration with snow and ice is a bonus unwanted. :-)

I'm with "Red&Bold".

My car is a naturally aspirated 2.0 petrol

Since the winter, acceleration has been sluggish whilst accelerating up a slight incline; even with a warm engine (driving 9-10 miles previously)

It's much more 'peppy' in the summer

I must admit, there is an optimum temperature range when my little Mazda 2 feels at its best. This seems to be single figure temperatures but not too close to freezing. This isn't imagination as a local hill needs a down shift in warm weather.
