Further to my previous question, as I can't find a way to edit this into the existing message, my friend's car was checked for leakages, but none were found.

Could be a Tuning fault? or

What is causing her petrol to be consumed so heavily for such a short distance of 3 miles which would take about 10 miles to consume the same level of petrol with my car?

The garage would need to check for fuel leaks but these would normally be obvious provided you had a sense of smell.

The garage would also need to carry out all the basic checks to ensure the engine is healthy and correctly set up with all the sensors etc operating properly.

If the car is only being used for 3 mile trips it will use large amounts of fuel.

Agreed, a cold engine is very inefficient.

Thanks also for your info.

A cold engine is also a likelihood. I'll check this with her. It sounds like a fault of some kind, due to the frequence of this happening. She's also done longer distances like 10 miles and still found the same fault. It's just puzzling how each garage she's tried hasn't located the fault.

Thanks for your info.

Approximately how long would a thorough check take to cover all elements of the car, in case something was missed in a basic check?

The garage fixed another fault but are stumped about this one who took about 5 to 10 minutes to look over her car's ongoing fault yesterday.

Also, would she need to visit an official Peugeot dealer rather than an independent garage (she's visited the latter) to fix stubborn faults like this one?

It's only a few years old, so more than likely the fault can be fixed, but it's just that the garages she's tried haven't located the fault.

but it's just that the garages she's tried haven't located the fault.

Could it be that there is no fault and its just the use it gets and the way its driven. No two people drive the same and it can make a huge difference to fuel usage.

To get an accurate indication of fuel consumption she needs to do at least 2 tank to tank fill ups and calulate the mpg. Gauges are not accurate or linear and only show an approximation of fuel in the tank.

I'm not yet sure if there's no fault, but I know that she's experienced the same situation of the petrol running down very quickly, whether she does short or long distances, no matter which independent garage she's used, yet with my car, while not a Peugeot, the petrol runs down at a moderate pace.

I will pass on your pieces of advice to her, and all going well, there'll be a solution to save her buying petrol more frequently than she needs to for her peace of mind.
