renault megane 1999 - Worrying engine noise - spytim

In a nutshell, my engine has started to develop a worrying ticking / clicking noise that is very prominent when doing between 40 and 50mph. in this video i caught it while idling but it isn't always there when idling, i think just when the engine is cold. i have a youtube video of the problem noise:

I would really appreciate any insight. the car appears to be functioning normally in terms of performance.

thanks

The most prominent noise there is diesel knock from one cylinder, its probably a faulty injector, you would expect it to go off at higher speeds, if it doesn't it wants looking at. A diesel specialist would be preferable to a dealer, they usually know what they are doing.

The petrol engine featured in the video clip looks like a K7M 1.6. A light clicking noise is not uncommon when this engine is cold and could be due to valve clearance or, I believe, oil pump valve clicking and should diminish/disappear when the engine is at working temp. But the noise heard from the video clip is bad news and sounds like a big end wear problem. It is time to get advice from a mechanic who is familiar with such engines and can listen to it running at different speeds. BTW is it leaking oil that I can see below the engine?

A petrol engine, oh dear, well its doing a very good impression of a diesel. Sorry, I have just looked at it again and can see the plug leads, it sounded so much like a diesel I didn't bother to look.

Could be an exhaust manifold leak - at any joint or a broken pipe. Check carefully for escaping gasses.
