Just got an excellent tip, (and used it) from an insurance broker mate, good even for online, which is how I used it.

Use your favourite comparison website, enter your details, (i used moneysupermarket) get your quote, go to the chosen website with your best quote, VARY your details on that website (excess) and see if it comes up cheaper, mine did for a lower excess! The quote is valid for 30 days so keep checking on the chosen comparison site and those offers actually change every day/. ended up like for like £80 better off on exactly comparable quotes over the past week.

If you keep rechecking the quotes in the month leading up to renewal date you can find on certain days or weeks some companies will do a great low deal just to top the list on moneysupermarket or some such just for that week and will be far below the rest but only on that week.

The internet comparison sites are so selective in their "choice" of company that it's not difficult to beat their best quote. Problem is that these sites only include insurers who pay websites for referrals.

An old-fashioned broker is worth their weight in gold.

>>An old-fashioned broker is worth their weight in gold.

I used one of them last time for a quote. They insisted on my address and 'phone number.

Their quote was a hundred quid more than than anyone else and I've been inundated with junk mail and calls ever since.

I have had fun putting other details into freepost envelopes and answering calls with 'hold the line please'.

Broker they may be but not "old-fashioned".

I use a broker in Belfast, all done by phone with documents emailed - about £100 less than the best comparison site figures - more like £200 less when the excesses are equalised. They check round each year for the best price and change the insurer when necessary.

Only tried comparrison sites once and what a rip off. Lowest quote by quite a margin was good old Norwich Union at £220 approx. Rang them up direct since I was unsure about one or two of the questions and after a couple of minutes was told the price was actually £160 if I bought direct thus the comparrison site was pocketing £60. Just try the common direct sites now in the month before renewal the check my renewal is competitive.

Brokers were great in the past but for run of the mill cars they are now struggling. One of my cars (classic) is via a broker but when I asked about the everday cars they immediately told me that they would not be able to compete against the direct price.
