Fiat Punto! - Cheap first insurance - frustrated mother!!

my son has jusy passed his test and we have bought him a Fiat Punto thinking this will be an ideal first car. The cheapest quote so far is £3995 third party only with 99% of the others being over £5K! The car is only worth about £500. He had a motorbike for 12 months with no claims but no-one seems to take this into account. I have just tried the co-ops smart box scheme but they declined it due to a different sound system being installed in the car?

even on my insurance the cheapest i could get is £3600. How do young people afford this? you can see why there are so many driving with no insurance (even though i dont condone that!).

any ideas? He is driving me mad as he has a licence, a car and cant go anywhere :(

Fiat Punto! - Cheap first insurance - jacks

When my son passed he found the cheapest was with Adrian Flux (about £1200 on a Ford Ka Group 2)

What helped keep the premium down was to add my wife as a named driver - but NOT as the main user - provided you have a clean licence/no convictions/accidents this helps to spead the risk. Or a relative who has a clean record.

If you run through the comparison websites try putting in Fully Comp as bizarely sometimes this comes out cheaper then TPF & T. Also - without lying or anything - look at the annual mileage and try to put a low (but realistic) figure

The fact that the car is "modified" may be skewing the quotes - for comparison get a quote without mentioning the sound system and think about removing this if in fact it is that which is giving higher quotes. If it's a very loud boom box then it's very distracting and - IMO - unsafe anyway for novice drivers having to concentrate with all this racket going on!

After the first year Adrian Flux jacked the premiums massively (despite no accidents, convictions or claims) and Admiral came in significantly cheaper than anyone else awhen we shopped around

A lot depends on your post code as well and we are lucky in that we seem to be in a lower risk area (Gloucestershire).

Good luck

Punto is not a cheap car to insure, it can have various engines and this one probably isn't the base model i suspect, it's popular with young lads so will feature highly in accident statistics, fact of life, that's why it's expensive.

Like it or not the first car has to be something undesirable unfashionable and slowish, unless he can afford to pay the amount quoted, in which case fine have whatever he likes.

have you tried quotes for the smallest engined Panda, Sceicento, Matiz, Ka, Micra, 106, 107 etc.

Erm?

Why did you not get insurance quote for prospective cars before purchasing same?

We are currently attempting to source a car for our daughter for next year, apart from reasonable mpg's, insurance quotations are the main issue. I enquire if in doubt.

Life is tough.

We are going through the same exercise. Consider one of the schemes where a black box is used to track the driver behaviour. Also, as said, consider reverting the car to absolute standard and limiting the annual mileage to as low as possible. Try insuring the car in your name as a second car and him as a named driver - provided of course that this is the case in reality. For example, he is living at home with you and in practice is not the main driver. Also add as many named experienced drivers to the policy, to spread the risk.

We are looking at quotes between 1300 to 2000 on a Panda 1.2. When he moves away, it will not be cost effective, as then he would have to be main driver and the cost becomes prohibitive.

This may sound odd but dont always assume the smallest, low powered car will be the cheapest to insure. Insurance is calculated on so many factors aside from engine size, one of the factors is how often they are in accidents and how much they cost to replace so you'll find that something like a 1.8litre Mondeo could be cheaper to insure than a 1.25 Fiesta for example. Sounds strange but its true, particularly with limited driving experience and no NCB.

Small cars with good mpg and low insurance groups generally hold their prices well now which can in effect wipe out the saving of having such a car if its so expensive to purchase in the first place.

Which Punto is it? As previously mentioned, remove the non standard sound system and add mum & dad if possible. You'll also find the Co Op will quote less once your son has had his licence for 3 months - even if he hasn't driven in that time. When running the quotes on the Co Op are you excluding driving between 11pm and 6am as they really don't like that?

Thats always confused me that has. Plenty of 'road safety campaigners' say new drivers shouldnt be allowed to drive at night or on our fastest roads but at night the roads are quieter and our fastest roads are our safest. Surely you're most likely to have an accident in town at low speeds during the daytime?

Very bizarre.

The answer lies in why would the car be out between 11pm and 6pm. Possibly because the insured has been to the pub, at a party, club or whatever and you have your drunken mates in the car. Even if the driver hasn't been drinking, spirits can be high and risks are taken. One seriously injured teenager can cost the insurer £5m plus. Low speed crashes around town don't cost much.

All of those things can happen during the day and i would be bold enough to suggest that drink driving is far more common in summer daytimes than on winter evenings in the runup to Christmas contrary to popular belief. In the summer you've got outdoor lunch parties and BBQ's and casual daytime drinking with pub lunches sat outside in the sun sort of thing and people probably drink plenty without particularly realising it.

What if you work nights and come home at 5am? Would you have to take the Bus because your insurance would force you to wait at work until 6.01am to be able to drive home?

Madness

We're not talking about the driver being over the limit, it's his/her mates egging them on.

I think your probably correct for us older drivers, but I don't think teenagers tend to do their drinking sitting outside with their ploughmans - not cool!

As for night workers - I think the answer is tough. Having said that, my son left home at 5.30 one morning and the black box didn't mind. Possibly because it knew he had been at home all night. Conversely, he got home from the pictures at 11.40 pm one night and his score dropped like a stone.

A computer deciding when you can go out or not just sounds a bit too much like communism to me to be comfortable with it. I know its a voluntary insurance scheme i just fear it may become compulsory one day.

Fiat Punto! - Cheap first insurance - Chris M

The computer isn't deciding whether you can go out or not, the computer is putting a price on your decisions. We have discussed this before, the black box is giving young drivers an option, have affordably priced insurance with restrictions or catch the bus.

A lot, in fact most, of my son's friends have gone the black box route. I think the Co Op have judged the young driver market well. Obviously older drivers aren't going to be so keen on the idea - either black box big brother or communism.

looking at the above web-site shows the punto starts at group 6/50 (new grouping system) the panda etc starts at group 2/50.

might be worth cutting your losses on buying the punto with its modified sound system and buying a panda/corsa etc see link above. until your lad has 12months no-claims then go from there....

paul.

(first car for me was a 39hp 1 litre metro.....hahaha but hey you gotta start some place.) 3 years later had a Fiesta RS turbo with 140hp (standard) and it cost the same to insure!!!! hahahaha.....group 1 metro. VS group 13/20 RS....still lived at the same place, only difference was time.....good luck.

I feel your pain but fret not, something will materialise. It may be like some people have said that you should think about changing the car. I know the car only cost 500 but it is not just this that the insurance companies are taking into account when they quote. Largely it is the damage that these cars have caused to other cars / people / property in insurance claims.

Some companies specialise in certain areas and my son has just got his ford Ka insured with Acorn Insurance. link here - www.acorninsure.co.uk/car-insurance/young-driver-i.../

They offer a young person insurance and are fairly reasonable. He said they came out cheaper than the rest for him anyway..

Having an experienced driver with no endorsmenst such as myself as a named driver helped in our case too!

Good luck
