Has anybody noticed that the new information signs on the M1 near Sheffield have a small light in the top left corner even when the sign is switched off. Is this some kind of speed camera or surveilance system?

Ben (who does about 75 so shouldn't have anything to worry about)

I'll look out for that then. Don't think it would be a speed camera as there would be contradictory to the rules about placement and visibility, and also a bit "Big Brother" (Orwell, not Davina McCall).

What makes me laugh is the yellow stickers that say "SIGN NOT WORKING", does it matter? Is anyone going to sue the DoT if they're late for a meeting because they weren't warned of a jam?

I have seen the light on both the unmarked signs and the ones that say "Not Working".

Are there any working yet, they were installed in Northants onks ago but still signed as out of use.

And all those north of Leicester should come into operation about a week before they and all their cabling have to be moved when the M1 is widened...........

Probably just to let passing officials know that the power is still on. even though no message has been put up for the last six months or more.

As what people don't say is more important than what they do say,
would I be correct in thinking that you believe the money for the signs could be better spent elsewhere? Like making a junction that doesn't need a warning sign to say it is clogging up?

and like spending money on educating drivers to move back into the lefthand lane after overtaking instead of widening the motorway.

I dont know how much was spend on widening the M6 round Preston to four lanes, but it just means the middle lane owners club spread themselves around a bit more

I have to grow old - but I don't have to grow up

Sign not working is a useful piece of information. The signs warn you of hazards ahead. If there's no warning you might be inclined to think that there's no problem ahead, whereas in fact it's just that the sign isn't working. Of course if the signs weren't there at all this wouldn't be necessary. But then we'd complain about lack of information on the motorways. You can't win, really.

Has anybody driven into Paris, the motorways there tell you in minutes how long it will take to get to destinations. Good idea.
