Have been out of the UK now for 14 years and am coming back at the end of the year. In the past we were insured on the wifes parents insurance but they are no longer with us. I dont know if we were "named" drivers or not BUT my ??? is.

1. If we werent is there anyway we can get decent insurance.

2. Will we get hammered.

We both had 6 years no claims when we left with a few points for speeding etc,(b***** Dorset/Devon cops) .............cheers

In your case I suggest you go see a proper High Strret Broker. As your a bit of a square peg case the online comparison sites won't do you much good.

Yes it's going to be pricey depending on what you want to cover, and where you live etc. My suggestion is think Bangernomics for a few years.

Best of luck.

Some insurers might recognise your NCD from the US. Your NCD in the Uk is lost after 2 years non-renewal. I lost my valuable 1st year NCD from this. Yet, they want to know about your driving record (endorsements etc.) for 5 years! Disingenuous swines! .

Disingenuous swines!

Thats thievin bastads to the rest of us.

Its almost worth leaving a cheap s***box in a lockup somewhere back in Blighty and paying cheap as chips insurance on it while you're away isnt it.

well for a start theres no NCD here in the US, well not at least in Floriduh. I think one insurerer dfoes give a slight discount for multi ins, bundling car/house etc. The wifes SLK and my RR cost me $2200 a year, my 1200 Triumph Trophy $200 a year????????????

5 months til armegodden.....

How does insurance work then if there's NCD?

Hello ExpatsFL, good advice to try a broker, they should know the system and give you a good service. I would bring with you any insurance documents you have from your US insurer. That way it can be verified that you have not made a claim and have been a responsible driver for many years. Insurers work on statistics, so if you can prove your record you should be considered less of a risk, then you will get a better price. I would still try the online comparison sites and some direct insurers. Again if you have documents to support the fact you have driven claim free for many years they should be taken into account. They all ask for details of previous insurance and renewal notices as proof of no claims, I don't see why US insurance documents wouldn't serve the same purpose as UK ones. The last resort would be to buy a cheap 'banger' for of you each for a year or two and build up your no claims that way. Best of luck. Concrete

Cheers Conc. We were put down as named drivers on the wifes late Mothers lil civic so will get a bit back. Might just drive that for a yr or so. Cant really use our US stuff as the wife has had 2 prangs in the last 4 yrs, one her fault! As to the previous poster on NCD, they just dont have it. A cpl of insurers do give a slight discount but they just renew at the same price as previous. BUT we do save on car tax, its very very cheap as ALL that money goes to road improvements etc not just the chancellors pockets!

Cheers

Ah but its all the extras that you cant normally get ya know. Sat nav with 50 cm dish on the roof, extra wide low profile tractor tyres for serious off roading. Oxygen replishment system for high altitude roads. Titanium exhaust 4 into 2 into 4. LCD dials, and silk furry dice woven by virgins.
