Peugeot 306 hdi - Help with whistling noise - scfc_151

Im really frustrated that I cant put my finger on a strange noise my car makes.

Its very hard to describe but its like a high pitched whining or whistling noise.

This happens when crusing at any speed when the revs are constant, but doesnt happen all the time. If im driving and dip the clutch it will disapear but it doesnt sound like driveshafts or wheel bearings more like an airflow type problem

It can be quite loud and very annoying. The car runs fine with no loss of power. The turbo seems fine.

Im just wondering what possible causes there may be? I did have a leak on the inlet manifold a while ago but that was fixed. Any help will be appreciated to get rid of this. Im sorry this is a very poor description, if I could get an accurate sound recording on here I would.

Does it vary in pitch with throttle opening? If so its likely to be turbo generated, either noisey in itself or possibly a leak in one of the pipes.

Hi, i wish i could get an accurate recording on video or something cos its so hard to describe. It seems to only happen when speed and revs are constant then if you speed up or slow down it drops off until revs are constant again.

I was wondering if it could be the egr or something but thats so difficult to get to

It's definitely turbo/boost related then-there's probably a leak somewhere in the pipework. Not often easy to see.

If its turbo noise you should be able to 'play a tune' on it by varying the throttle position.

Thanks for the replies. As I say it disapears if I use more throttle and comes back when revs are constant. I was originally looking around the turbo, wastegate, egr and inlet manifold but cant find anything. Needless to say that doesnt mean theres not a problem there cos its a pig to try and get a good view of most things let alone get my hands to them. Thanks again

Fuel whistle was a known issue with early HDis.

There is [was?] a retro-fit fuel-line pulsation damper modification pack available from Peugeot dealers.

Ahh i read something about this ages ago. Is there a specific way of diagnosing this to make sure thats the problem?
