It sounds as though you have an over fueling or timing problem, I would suggest you take it to a diesel specialist and have the fault codes read.

i took itfor drive last night up local bypass and it chucked a lot of grey smoke out and put spanner light on for a couple of seconds and then it seemed to be a bit better thanks

Before you spend cash just check the air filter is not black with muck and replace if it is, then replace fuel filter if old or unsure.

yh the air filter looks new so i will replace fuel filter soon , i was told about using a product called 10 k boost has anybody used it if so where do you spray it thanks

Spraying magic potions isn't going to help - your car is clearly faulty

Not even redex or 0-60 cetane booster?? ;)

Grey smoke is unburned fuel (although some people confuse grey smoke with soot which is black). Does the engine sound clattery when it is smoking? If the EGR is not closing under load then that would cause black smoke. Has the engie suffered an 'optimisation' in its history.

the engine does not sound clattery and seems to go ok just wondered if the injectors are leaking bcause when you start it first thing in morning it seems to misfire and chucks smoke out ?

You may have a faulty glow plug and while it's warm it's starting with good compression, but come winter maybe a pig to start.

Do check them remove and see if they glow.

Glow plugs shouldn't be operational with air temperatures above 10 centigrade. They cycle off under heavy load anyway. Certainly shouldn't affect fuel economy. If it's smoking under load and hard to start, then the fuel rail pressure is definitely suspect. I would suggest changing the fuel filter and checking to see if there's any gunk in the fuel pump inlet.

You need a hell of a pressure drop across an air filter to cause problems. The air filter seldom clogs up to such an extent that it seriously impedes air flow-in spite of what K 'n' Chav salesmen might say. Never traced a fault back to an air filter yet.
