Hyundai Tucson 2.00 CRTD Limited 2007 - Nexen tyres - V69

Are Nexen tyres any good in wintry conditions? I have just bought a 2007 Hyundai Tucson which has had a set of Nexen CP 641 tyres fitted very recently. However my reason for buying a 4x4 is to make next winter, if it's a bad one, less traumatic than the last two. Anecdotally, CP641s don't cut the mustard in slippery conditions. Does anyone have experience of these, to me, unknown tyres? If there is the remotest possibility that they are not up to the job I shall change them for a premium brand which can do the job. I am aware that the optimum solution to the problems encountered in ice and snow is to fit winter tyres but I can't be doing with hassle and anyway, have nowhere to store a spare set of wheels, so will compromise with the best all round tyres to cope with such conditions. I'm thinking Khumo with which the car was originally fitted. Any comments or suggestions?

These are about the only reviews i can find, most seem to find the same as you that wet grip isn't the best.

If twer me, i'd run them through the summer to get some use out of them, and if the wet grip proved to be too poor then maybe search out a set of good all seasons ready for next winter, and flog the nexens...don't leave getting your next set too long though else you'll be paying through the nose once the cold weather returns.

mytyres dot co dot uk show various test results for most tyres and the Nexen doesn't do well in wet grip and braking, quite poor and very poor in snow.

I agree with gordonbennet, a good all season tyre will be miles better and address your requirement of not having two sets of tyres. Plenty to choose from (not now but don't leave it later than August to find some) but I've had both Vredestein Quatrac and Nokian WRG2 and both very impressive in snow and slush and for my easy going driving style were fine through the warmer months. They both rate better than the Nexen in dry and wet performance not just snow.

The Nexens I put on my C5 were better in the wet than the Michelins I replaced - far better. The Michelins Energies were a liability in the wet - the Nexens were fine.

Well as I've said elsewhere I on't rate the Energy, and Nexen are respectable enough -- they are very much a budget tyre but they're by no means a ditchfinder.

A step above the Nankangs and Federals, but a step or two below the Khumos, Toyos and Falkens. And a bucketload better than the Wanlis and Sunews.

That said I've never run a tyre yet that isn't manageable if you accept its limitations.

Thanks for all the advice. The consensus seems to be to change the Nexens at the end of summer, so will do that. The original tyres were not, as I stated originally, Khumos. They were Hankook. Are these OK? I have always rated Goodyears. Has anyone had experience of their Wranglers on an SUV in adverse weather conditions? Any other recommendations that won't break the bank but will perform please?

As Oldtoffee suggested, Nokian and Vredestein make quality tyres i use both and would recommend without hesitation, Uniroyal and many other makes.

As per OT's post, all season is the way to go, but don't be taken in by the tyre being labelled M&S alone, it means naff all except the tread pattern, it doesn't mean the tyre compound is cold rated.

For an all year round tyre you want genuine all season which will have the snowflake symbol stamped on the sidewall (genuine winter tyres too)...this means the tread rubber IS designed to run in the cold.

Do your research then when you have a shortlist, keep an eye open every week without fail on Mytyres, Tyremen and any other tyre sites you favour, sooner or later your choice will appear at a bargain price...buy quickly, as real bargains disappear overnight, worth having a word with any local tyre indies near you.

Camskills was excellent till quite recently, but too many times they have shown fantastic prices and are unable to supply indefinately, offering alternatives instead....pity as they set the standard prior to this.

Not much between Hankook and Khumo to be honest -- both respectable mid-range Korean manufacturers who supply tyres to a lot of car manufacturers.

I suspect that Nexen will be joining that group soon enough -- their marketing has been quite aggressive of late which suggests confidence in their product. Maxxis are the same.

I'd certainly be in no particular hurry to replace the Nexen tyres. Funnily enough the Nexen Winguard Sport is on my shortlist for the winter tyres -- not much feedback out there but what I have read has been quite positive, and they are cheap (£55 for 205/55R16 from reifen.com even now when no-one has any stocks of cheap winter tyres).
