Peugeot 206 Sport - Auto Gearbox Problem - Tarynleej

Hi

I bought a 55 plate 206 sport auto from a Ford dealer local. After buying I noticed that the gear changing wasn't smooth, it hunted between gears and held onto the gears too long. There was also an odd problem of the car banging into second gear the first time it was driven in the morning..

Ford sent it to Peugeot (after threats of trading standards) who after re-programming the computer and fiddling with it eventually said it needed a new gearbox, Ford offered me a replacement car saying a new gearbox wasn't "economically viable" since then they have sent the car to a transmission specialist who have changed the valves and programming. I was told the car may "feel different" and be more like it should be "now it's fixed" (it took 2 months of backwards and forwards to get to this stage).

I drove the car yesterday and the problem with 1st-2nd appears cured however I put my foot down to overtake from 35 - 60mph and the car was at 5500 revs before it changed gear! The revs seems really high and I've lost confidence in the car which is a shame as I really love it :(

I've never owned an auto before but this seems excessive.. I was told that Peugeot hang onto the gears for 30 seconds to ensure that you don't lose speed..

Can anyone advise before I take it back to the garage!

Thanks

it might sound condescending but do you know how to use an autobox.

Giving an autobox a sudden good shove by puuting your foot all of the way down rapidly, sends a message to the box that you want a rapid increase in speed, for instance in a hurried overtake.
To achieve this, the gearbox will hold the car in a lower gear to accelerate quickly until the engine peak power is achieved before changing up, where you should be at the beginning of the useful power available in the next highest gear. It's called "kickdown". Maybe as a sport badged model the programming makes it a little more ferocious than a standard model

If you've put your foot down and indeed hit 'kickdown' the engine will rev almost to the red line before upchanging, it's quite normal.

If you don't like this reduce the amount of throttle you are giving it, or once you've passed the car in question, lift your foot off a bit and the box should resume normal changing.

Is there a 'sport' or 'economy' button for the gearshift, that might give lower revs between changes.

Read the handbook.

Thanks!

I've actually had the car 12 months and it's now behaving differently since it's come back from the transmission people - which is why I'm asking the questions!
Yes I know how to use and autobox... yes I know about kickdown.. HOWEVER
prior to it going in the car didn't rev as high.. could be that it was under performing before?

I just need reassurance that the flaming engine isn't going to give out now too :(

Does the car have a kickdown cable?

If so, they usually have an adjustment which can indeed make the change down happen earlier or later relative to pedal position.

Might be worth making sure the transmission specialist readjusted the cable after doing whatever else they did inside the transmission. A workshop manual might tell you how much free play you should see at the throttle cable linkage, for example.

Yes. It should have revved to the red line if the accelerator was floored. And proviidng it's warm, it's good for the engine to do this occasionally. Sends hot oil enthusiastically around it dislodging any sludge and carrying it to the filter, blows any deposits away from the combustion chambers and [in the old days] clears the exhaust baffles of accumulated deposits.

Some g/boxes are 'intelligent' in that they sense the way you drive. If you use the accelerator quickly rather than slowly , e.g. 'earholing' your way through a queue of traffic, it will hold lower gears for longer. My ZF 5HP19 is an astonishing advance on my BL LT77.....like comparing a typewriter to a wordprocessor.

Sounds like a normal automatic box operation as mentioned above.

Foot-flat should get the car to run almost to the red-line.

My Shogun will run to 4100rpm with redline at 4200, and my missus's FRV will run to 6700rpm with the line at 6800 if you keep the foot down.

On a warm engine it won't cause much stress.

Unlikely to reply as this was in 2011.
