Peugeot 306 - Starting problem (when hot) - ah207

Recently noticed a starting problem.

When the car is started from cold - for example first thing in the morning, or in the evening after work, it starts first time. No problems. But if I start it again 15 mins, or half an hour after a journey, it 'chokes' - and only starts at the 3rd or 4th attempt. The choking sound is difficult to describe, but it sounds a bit like a single prolonged cough - which then dies. Only seems to happen when the engine is still warm. When cold, it starts just fine. Any ideas what could be causing this ? Thanks in advance.

Petrol or diesel?

Sorry about that omission - its a petrol engine (1.4L, unleaded '95) and the car is from June 1997 (phase II) with a fuel injector.
