No Claim Discount - Richard the stag

My main car is a classic, which I have had for 12 years. Now I need an up to date car I find I have nil No Claims Discount, so will have to pay maximum for insurance cover, even though I have not claimed in over 40 years of driving. HJ has suggested a muliti car policy for both cars. Any other suggestions. This must also happen when a company driver retires after being insured through the company.

With a company car driver,it is recommended that the driver approaches the firm that insured his company;what does the firm that insures your"classic" offer?

If the driver is registered as the main user (ie it's not a pool car), then the lease company can provide a driver's record to potential insurance companies-which is as good as an insurance renewal letter to most companies.

Classic car cover is usually issued on the basis of very limited mileage, and is consequently very cheap. It's hardly surprising that it doesn't include all the benefits of a conventional policy. You should have checked the T and Cs. It must be in the policy summary.

Driving record and no claims bonus are two different things.

You have one but not the other. Your premium will not be the maximum therefore. Unfortunately classic car policies are normally on different terms to "normal" insurance, hence why they do not normally generate a no claims bonus (this is one of the reasons why they are so much cheaper).

Most insurers offer some form of transfer or introductory discount to ex company car drivers because there are a significant number of them and it makes commercial sense to do so.

Best wishes

Some insurance companies will give you an introductory discount of 30% & sometimes more, if you can prove that you haven driven regularly for some years.

I would expect your classic insurer to be able to supply you with a confirmation letter of this.

Would be best to go to a broker as they know the best deals.
