Zafria - Recovery uplift did more damage to car - shawad

I'm in an Insurace Nightmare at the moment!

Car is an 07 Zafira 1.8 Design with only 25k on the clock.

Some ne'er-do-well stole one of my Zaffy's wheels last week (locking wheel nuts and all) leaving the car lying on the disc and backplate. Since VX don't supply even a space saver anymore, we had to arrange an insurance pickup to their authorised repairer.

The garage refused to pick up the car as they didn't have a wheel or the ability to do a specialist uplift, so after a lot of ringing around, the insurance co sent out their 'specialist' recovery company, who promptly turned up with a flatbed (no cherry picker) and drove the car out of the drive and onto the back on 3 wheels.

Now the insurance is saying the damage caused by this, which now amounts to a knackered rear axle, knackered disc and backplate, knackered handbrake and the obvious new wheel, tyre and lock nuts makes the car potentially uneconomical to repair.

I know it's all on the insurers side, as it's their recovery company, but I just know I'm the one going to be picking up the pieces, as they'll only offer me book on my car (6.5k according to whatcar), whereas replacing it with similar is going to cost at least 2k more than that. With no 3rd party to blame for an accident who do I go chasing for the uninsured losses - the insurer themselves? The uplift company they use?

As a realist (rather than a pessimist) any advice on how best to deal with the inevitable?

The claim is against the recovery firm and their insurer. If you can show that the book is wrong and the retail price of buying an alternative is higher they should pay you the higher figure.

It's not a comfortable position as your own insurance company are likely to be calling the shots and this is one of those occasions (more frequent than admitted) where the interests of the driver are not the same as those of their insurer.

I can probably assist you in recovering the uninsured losses, in arguing as to whether the car is an economic write off and if it is, on the valuation but I will need you to send a contact telephone number and email to asklucy@honestjohn.co.uk so we are not discussing it in an open forum.

I can only imagine they drove it over a few rocks/bricks in the compound before taking it to the repairer on the Monday morning.

Insurance apparently thought I'd done the damage by driving it with 3 wheels so now they're clued up they'll be chasing the recovery co for the damage, but I guess that could take a while. Meantime I'm transporting the family around in a pug 107 courtesy car!

Hi Shawad, sorry to hear of the disgraceful attempt by the recovery co, but it does demonstrate that the current way of manufacturers saving money by skimping on luxuries like spare wheels has its drawback ..... unfortunately for the car owner! A number of points if I may:-

The objective of insurance is to put the insured party in the same position as it was immediately prior to the incident. Which means they should be paying you the amount it would take to buy an 07 Zafira 1.8Design with approx 25k

But also, whilst I don't have access to Glasses Guide as I am sitting here, looking on Autotrader I can find quite a few priced between 7 & 8 grand. Given that these will be priced to allow for an "over-allowance" on a PX (which you obviously don't have) I would have thought you could pick one up from a Net Q dealer for about £7,200 to £7,500. I would ask a local Q salesman what the Retail Guide is for your car & whatever it is this is what the insurance co should be paying. If they won't tell them you will contact the Insurance Ombudsman

Good luck

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully it won't come to that, but I like to plan ahead!

theres going to be a market for 24 hours spare wheel sales/delivery

probably like the vans that come out after a misfuel they could become specialists

Why did they have to recover it if it was sitting on your driveway? Common sense would say they get local VX dealer to turn up with a new wheel and tyre and fit it on your driveway.
