I'm in an Insurace Nightmare at the moment!
Car is an 07 Zafira 1.8 Design with only 25k on the clock.
Some ne'er-do-well stole one of my Zaffy's wheels last week (locking wheel nuts and all) leaving the car lying on the disc and backplate. Since VX don't supply even a space saver anymore, we had to arrange an insurance pickup to their authorised repairer.
The garage refused to pick up the car as they didn't have a wheel or the ability to do a specialist uplift, so after a lot of ringing around, the insurance co sent out their 'specialist' recovery company, who promptly turned up with a flatbed (no cherry picker) and drove the car out of the drive and onto the back on 3 wheels.
Now the insurance is saying the damage caused by this, which now amounts to a knackered rear axle, knackered disc and backplate, knackered handbrake and the obvious new wheel, tyre and lock nuts makes the car potentially uneconomical to repair.
I know it's all on the insurers side, as it's their recovery company, but I just know I'm the one going to be picking up the pieces, as they'll only offer me book on my car (6.5k according to whatcar), whereas replacing it with similar is going to cost at least 2k more than that. With no 3rd party to blame for an accident who do I go chasing for the uninsured losses - the insurer themselves? The uplift company they use?
As a realist (rather than a pessimist) any advice on how best to deal with the inevitable?
