peugeot 405 diesel 1.9 td - possible turbo problem - flowerloverman

Hi , i have a 95 pug 405 1.9td estate that has been making a sort of howl noise that gets higher in pitch as the engine revs become higher, the noise starts at 2,000 rpm onwards, i believe it may be a loose of broken hose somewhere along the system although my local mechanic has said he has checked it all, but i dont believe him, could it possibly be a turbo problem instead although i can hear it whistle up, hope someone can help thanks in advance

Certainly sounds like an air leak, if the turbo is working properly and the power is OK it will be on the inlet side, the pipe that goes from the air filter to the turbo, often the pipe comes partly disconnected from the turbo.

hi flowerloverman

In my experience the leak is more likely on the output side of the turbo my reasons for saying this are twofold 1 because by your description the noise only really starts from 2000rpm ie when the turbo begins to push and 2 because I've come accross it several times before on various vehicles both lorries and cars TIP : first make sure all the hose clips are seated properly and are secure if they are you probably have a split rubber hose which can be almost invisible if you dont know where it is .But if any of the hoses are very oily that is a giveaway look at those first especially if theyre very soft

Hi peter and strobe , thanks for the replies , ive booked the car in at a different garage next week so hope all is sorted then, the mechanics early prognosis is 1 of 2 things, loose of split pipework or 1 of the manifolds gaskets have failed, i need to get it sorted in the next 5 weeks as my mot is due and am guessing if i dont get this problem done it will affect my emissions, like i say i can hear the turbos spooling sound and then from 2,000 the noise i described becomes apparent and becomes extremely sluggish basically like driving a non turbo`d car, again thx for the swift replies i will kep posting the results as to assist others whom may have the same or similar problem, thanks

If it has affected the performance I to would go for a leak on the output side. Shouldn't affect the emmisions though because the pump will throttle back in the absence of boost pressure.

Hi just thought i`d say thanks for all the advice, the car is now back to its old self with more power on top , the problem turned out to be the intercooler it had a massive hole on the back of it and it was letting all the air out , the mechanic i took it to 2 weeks ago has really ripped me off for the last time, so all in all 10 pounds for a second hand 306 intercooler and 20 pound to fit it , i think thats quite good , thanks again simon
