Im looking at cars under 2.5K around 2002 age so strong chance of reliability issues unless im lucky.

Personally i would not bother get it serviced by a good indie buy one with service history at 8 yrs not worth any warranty cover money for old rope.

The Garage (indie) that I bought my two Renault Laguna?s from ? offered 1 year warranties and with both of these cars I had constant issues with brakes, and ABS systems so much that I will never ever by anything from Renault ever again.
However the garage was brilliant and didn?t ever quibble when I kept bringing in the car, so much so that I have since bought a further two cars from them, a Astra, and then the Vectra.
I never had to take the Astra in, and touch wood the Vectra hasn?t been in yet but I know that should it the problem will be sorted out without fuss.
I would still check the small print ? however the reason for me getting my cars from then was at 1st word of mouth, and then repeat business.

Most private warranty companies are notorious for wiggling out claims!
Buy a reliable & well maintained (ie serviced properly) model in first place and thus you can reduce repair costs.
Most manufactuers' extended warranties do not go beyond 5th year. So, for 2002 cars, you're out of luck.
Just put aside a rainy day fund for repair and you should be ok.

as said really
a warranty on an 8 year car is a wiggle out
you would be much better buying from an established trader who will give his own warranty and have his own repair facilities in house

ok thanks for the advice folks, reason I asked is id read some good reports about "warranty direct" mentioned on here so just wondered if it was worth a look.

One point to note with warranties.
If you buy a one year warranty on a young second hand car at the time of purchase, you will normally have a three month guarantee from the vendor so in real terms from your one warranty you will only get the last nine months. It might be wiser to buy the warranty after the three month stage and get decent cover.
