SORN and riding to a test centre. - Pugugly
I'm taking one of the bikes out of mothballs, It's been SORN'd for a while and It's going to need an MoT - now I used to be able to ride to a Test Centre with no MoT and no VEL for a pre-arranged test - now following reading something here a few days ago which suggested I can't do this with a SORN in place - is this right or is the law bonkers ?

From the DVLA site:

Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test:

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.

This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.

If you're right, then it is - else the only way to get there would be to have the thing delivered.

Well I could tow it there on a trailer but seems a nonsense - I have to pass at least two known spots were traffic cars sit ANPRing - so I need warp drive ! It is insured of course.

I reckon you can, just as you were able to without "tax". Here's a thing:

Just make sure the garage has got the MOT booked in writing, with the reg number, to avoid difficulties with the ANPR boys.....

Thanks - being tested at a mate's place so will be recorded. He's used to getting BiBs in to check his books on MoTs.

That has good info on getting a vehicle to the test centre. However, it does not mention taking it to be repaired/serviced prior to the MOT. Son's car is on SORN, needs to get some repairs, test driven plus general service and it is planned that it will be collected on a low loader to be taken to the repair shop. Is that also okay? Presumably yes, as it will be booked in?
It was put on SORN as he could not afford the repair bill and the 'maternal bank' decided it was one repair too many!

There is a note on the MOT failure document that you can take it (pre-arranged and booked) to a repairer for work "in connection with an MOT".
I think those are the words, or something similar.

The car of course has to be otherwise legal, as with getting to and back from an actual MOT. So you can't drive a complete wreck on the road even if you are taking it to be fixed.

I did once use the concession to buy a car for spares from a long way away. I booked an MOT, then stopped as I passed home on the way and rang and cancelled the MOT, saying I had just realised it needed something fixing.

That's fine, but you mustn't use it on the road unless driving to the MOT, or afterwards to be fixed (if it's not so bad it gets a prohibition notice, in which you can't).

From the horses mouth (or the other end).

Driving to an MOT test when a SORN is in place

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for that vehicle.

Looks like I was too slow copying and pasting!

I always assumed that that was the case - something posted here made me wonder though, I'll dig it out later. Anybody want to buy a nice Honda CB650 Nighthawk - will MOT'd and taxed of course !

I posted the other day that if i have a car in stock that ive had to register in my name after 3 months and so i sorn it i cant drive on the road with the trade vplates to cover it.
Obviously i do but its complicated if a traffic officer wants to start preaching.

had an old triumph bike here that had no reg docuaments , insured it on the frame No, and was allowed to ride it to an MOT station (it passed) , I then went to the local DVLA , who issued a new age related No plate , I then informed the insurance company of the number.

it was fun watching those gatso,s flash!!!!!

PU, I drove my Maxi (sorn'd) to and from its recent MOT, I checked with the test station and the website mentioned above, you ARE ok if you have suitable insurance... I'm not sure where BB is coming from on this as its quite clear that its legal under those circumstances...
