06 -VAG engine 2.0Tdi v 19Tdi, reliability? - massey
I recently acquired a Audi 2.0Tdi . My mechanic informs me that I should have went for the 1.9Tdi model instead as the engine was far more reliable. Anybody have any experiences to back up this claim?

I've had both in the A4, neither engine gave any trouble, but the 1.9 130BHP engine is significantly more economical than the 2.0 TDI 140. Legend has it that the 2.0TDI is not as good, but I see no other evidence of this, in fact the 2.0 TDI has an improved CAM belt setup that is less prone to failure than the 1.9 engine I think.

The later 1.9 (AWX) engines got the revised cambelt tensioner.

I'm reluctant to comment because I've not actually owned a VAG 2.0 diesel (mine is a 1.9) but driven a few. The 2 litre engines with balancer shafts are definitely smoother than the 1.9s but some of these are rumoured to have balance shaft (and oil pump) drive problems - see American Passat website for engine type BHW. Cam follower/shaft problems and turbocharger failures also seem to feature more frequently on the 2 litre engine - the complexities of the DOHC layout may be responsible.

The fitment of a DPF definitely scuppers the efficiency of this engine - as most 2.0s have DPFs this may account for the accusations of higher fuel consumption. I'm most impressed with the efficiency and general usefulness of the (Euro Cat III) 1.9 engine. I'll look after it.

Google "Passat BHW engine failure" and it's all there.

I think to bring it into line with the 2.0 engine.

Only the 2.0 170 BHP have DPF fitted in the UK usually..

An 06 140 won't have a DPF.

Nor does my 07 A4 2.0 TDI 140
