Vectra 3.2 Elite Auto 04 70k.
The smelly Vectra has been written off. Not just on cost grounds (£3800 to repair), but also they don't believe they would be able to completely rid it of the creosote smell. So I'm waiting a call in which they are going to make me an offer.
Vx site says Glass's gives following p/ex values:
Excellent condition: £2930
Average condition: £2630
Below average condition: £2310
Parkers says (based on 40k miles)
Franchised Dealer £4,935
Independent Dealer £4,715
Private Good £4,180
Private Poor £3,340
Part Exchange £3,645
Autotrader doesn't have many but those that they do are quite varied in price. And are mostly dealers, so would presumably be open to some negotiation.
Does anyone have any idea whether I'd be doing myself if I held out for £4k?
Replacement will most likely be a Mondy btw, if anyone knows of a decent one at a good price (Ghia/Titanium/X spec)
|
My understanding is that you should get a payout to enable you to replace it from a dealer, and at 04, I guess that's more likely to be outside the Vx network.
Parkers is notoriously unreliable. If Glasses is accurate (another medium-sized if) it looks at though £4000 ish would be the dealer retail price.
Tried calling Joe Dowd and see what he can get you at auction?
|
Yep, I'd be aiming for Glasses part-ex price + £1000-£1500 to cover the dealer margin.
The insurers are, after all, supposed to be keeping you in the same position that you're in now. Not that they won't start off with a comedy offer, mind.

AFAIK, the market for ex-rep-mobiles in anything over 2 litre engine sizes is dead.

Offer is £3500. Not enough IMO
|
|
In which case, they're probably expecting you to push it up another £500 or so anyway. Persevere and you'll get the £4k you're expecting, maybe more.

AFAIK, that applies when you claim from 3rd party. If you claim off your own comprehensive Policy, your Insurer is obliged only to go by the contract you have with him [i.e. contract between 1st party and 2nd party].

jbif that's not quited correct
Material damage element of comprehensive policy is a a contract of indemnity and the Insured should indeed expect to be put back to same position financially by his Insureres as he was before the accident, less any applicable excess. The problems is always establishing the value of the vehicle which eventually comes down to negotiation.

Pull trade ads from Autotrader for same model/similar mileage, and hope that they support your £4,000 target!

Have you thought of buying it back from them - you know the car, not as if its mechanically sort of broken
|
But if the smell is difficult or impossible to remove....
... replace interior at cost and it might still smell.. Might not be wise. Hold out for more.

I always look on autotrader & ebay and find highest price cars.
find out an email address at insurer and email all your findings out of how much a car is going to cost you to find, then explain all the extra work of actually going out to purchase the car.
I would print off about 10 - 15 different adverts.
most prices I can see are between 4 to 5K
and explain that's what you need to buy a replacement. = £5K no less.
I did the same for my Mom. she had a rover 25 stolen. her pride and joy.
I put a lot of time and energy effort into showing insurers exactly how much a replacement was. think at the time they offered 3.5K and I wanted 5.5K
It took a good 2 months of phone calls/emails/faxs.
but they paid out, and me and my sister put £250 each and got her a spanking new corsa with 120miles on.
she still has the corsa. 53 plate.

Pretty much done that tiredeyes, thanks. I've put every ad for "vectra" and "3.2" within a 100 mile radius into a spreadsheet. Then filtered it a number of times : All Elites, All automatics: All 04s. Only 1 car ticks every box, but it has a much lower mileage.
There are not a lot on there in the first place. I am comfortable that all of the different "views" show that their offer is at the lower end of reasonable - it isn't entirely unreasonable, but with such a small sample it is hard to be too scientific
I don't want or need to be unreasonable over this - I think I can reasonably demonstrate that they are about £400 adrift of an acceptable offer, and that will do for me.
PU - Rob is right, the car is a bit of a liability, as I had the affected parts of the interior out of the car for 2 weeks+ and it still smelt when you first got in. I get your drift about "knowing the car". Which is why I am happy for it to go... :-) (Nothing serious, just impending big service, tyres, the usual...)
|
Just accepted £3750 which is reasonable. Would have been due major service (inc cambelt) within about 8k, front tyres nearly due, also rear shocks needed something doing (not serious). Oh, and the bodywork left a little to be desired - generally good condition except damage over o/s rear wheel arch (Mrs in multi storey), rear bumper probably needed respray (careless driver, not us!) and general imperfections.
All in all not too bad.
Update - would add that More Th
