Howdy,
I own a completely basic model 1.0 VW Polo (2000-2002 model Y reg) and was wondering if it would be possible to fit a K&N performance air filter to make it sound a bit more beefy?
As the car is still under waranty will it invalidate it and will the insurance premium increase?
I would love to hear any comments,
regards,
Neb

It may sound racy, but expect nothing else. checkout

Probably, probably, and why not just "forget" to put in the present filter element? You can always put it back quick if there's a problem!

Yes, yes and yes
don't expect much extra power, if any. Just lots more noise.
Don't leave the air filter out - you'll be storing up for engine wear problems once the car is out of warrenty and you'll be paying.

righty,
noise is a good thing in my book!
i am looking to hear from anyone that owns a mk 5 VW Polo and has modified it in any way!
i have found that there are far too few mk5 polo modding sites on the net!
any help or info much appreciated!

Do you really want people to turn their heads to see where the noise is coming from, only to see a humble basic model 1.0 VW Polo going by?
Perhaps this is why so many boy racers tint their windows - to avoid the embarrassment factor of themselves and their passengers!!

Is a "mk5 polo modding site" not a contradiction in terms?

now, now boys. "It is the inalienable right of every human being to make a fool of himself" or "it's the common mans way of providing distinction from without where nature has failed to provide it from within" - both Charles Emerson Winchester III (MASH 4077th).
There is considerable legislation covering noise output from cars and it's about to get tougher. It's about NOT disturbing thy neighbour when he's trying to get a good nights kip. When you grow up, you'll realise how unpleasant it is being kept awake by noisey cars being driven round the streets at a constant 5000rpm.
So if you must make your motor all rorty torty at least do it with discression and consideration for others.
|
Drill holes in your downpipe. Make sure you don't end up playing the recorder version of three blind mice as you hit 3000rpm, that IS embarrassing...
BAG,BAG anyone?

Neb,
Changing the air filter will make minimal difference to the induction noise - you need to either go for an induction kit or, the cheaper option, drill holes in your airbox with a large drill bit. Remember to drill the holes so that the incoming air is still filtered.
If you do want more noise (not that I recommend it), then you'll want to change your exhaust.
You must tell your insurance before you do either, many insurers do not cover modified cars and those that do will only validate your premium if they know about *everything*. I can't imagine anything worse than some punk crashing into your pride-and-joy only to find the insurance won't pay up - I doubt it would raise that much unless they think your turning into a boy racer. For warranty issues I would recommend your speak to Volkswagen.
Either mod will make a big fat zero actual difference to performance, but the placebo effect may make you feel otherwise.
At least with changes to the induction system it is only louder under hard acceleration.

p.s. I am not a boy racer, but this forum is meant to support all tastes so I thought I'd answer his question.

There are cheaper was to look like a prat. Why don't you just buy some furry dice?
Alternatively why don't you record the noise of a passing Spitfire and play this back on the obligatory very loud stereo, or ICE as it now appears to be called.

I wasn't really fooled by this troll. I bet it's Toad winding everybody up.

Blimey Charlie,
I ask a simple question about changing the standard air filter for a sportier, allbeit noiser one and everyone decides to go 'off on one' at me, accusing me of being a boy racer and wanting to keep people from sleeping at night!
I know putting a performance filter into a 1.0 is a bit of a pointless thing to do but i cant afford a bigger engine so i though i would beef it up a little in the noise dept!
I have no plans and can see no point in modding the car as at the end of the day it just aint fast enough.

p.s did you guys not have a youth?

Yes. So why aren't you out sniffing glue and drinking cider?

p.s did you guys not have a youth?
Kids today!
When I was a lad we couldn't afford cars; my 12 borthers and I had to pretend to drive to the pit by running barefoot over broken glass making 'broom, broom' noises while our Father whiped us with his belt....
Then after a 15 hours shift down pit, mining naturally occuring headlight flashers for BMW's...

Yes. And if you take a look at my reply under the thread 'vehicles outside the forum' in the tech section you will see how I got my motoring kicks.
You'll also notice how I mention that it is not necessary to have the "best car in the world" to get out there, have real fun and come away from events with some silverwear.
PS: the motor clubs in question were (and still are) all RACMSA affiliated and all events run in accordance with Blue Book regulations.
Oh, and 'proper' motorsport impresses the girls no end!!!

p.s did you guys not have a youth?
Yes, that's why I thought it was cool to rip the baffles out of my restricted Yamaha "Fizzy's" exhaust pipe. Still did 35 mph flat out, but instead of doing it discretly, people heard me coming 10 mins before I actually got there!! When I did eventually get there, due to the advanced warning, they had all scattered as they didn't want to asociate themselves with a prat on a moped!!

Trying to make a car sound better? - yes, I've had a go at that. Mostly I went for the exhaust because all I found with air filters was that the thing made a nasty hiss.
A really throaty inlet roar is caused by valve overlap and this is linked to the camshaft profile. It's one of the reasons that Alfas (among others) sound glorious.
The best exhaust noise improvement I heard was on my mate's Fiat 600 fitted with an Abarth manifold and box - brilliant!.
