Mercedes Benz - 96 1.8 seems stuck in second gear (auto ?)

96 1.8 seems stuck in second gear (auto ?) - RGraham
purchased car from market . full service history.75000 miles very good condition

sadly appears to be stuck in second gear. i have been told it can either be electrical or mechanical.could you advise me on the wisdom on having this fault corrected
