2003 1.0 T3 - Clutch - is it judder ??? - Jes
Hi,

We've had loads of problems with our 53 plate 1.0 T3 Yaris surrounding the clutch. It's now on it's 3rd replacement clutch (all work performed at the main dealer) due to a 'squarking' sound when pulling away in first gear.

Today, I noticed a judder feel to the clutch, but was told by the technician that I wasn't applying enough revs to the car. The car is my wifes' and I drive a zafira diesel 99% of the time. On the zafira I can pull away without applying any revs, yet the Yaris just stalls if I do this.

It's been years since I last owned a petrol car and cannot remember if I can drive it the same way asI drive my diesel. Can anyone enlighten me ?

Regards,
John

Old diesels - you could just let the clutch out at idle, modern diesels with taller gearing and fly by wire throttles and ECU control may not be so forthcoming, depends on model/make.

Most petrol engines in my experience need 1000 - 1500 rpm to pull away from standing.
You need more revs on a petrol engine during general driving typically, so where you might be using 1500 - 3000rpm on your diesel, you would be using 2000 - 4000rpm on the petrol.

Hi,

Petrols always need a few revs to pull away in first. When cold the revs are usually so high on modern petrols that you can often get away without any revs. Note that some judder from the clutch is quite common on the first few 'pull-aways' from cold, due to build up of moisture on clutch. Should only occur for first mile or so.

Really?!!?

Never experienced this on a car!

Wouldn't buy one if I noticed it.

Surely proper application of clutch and throttle will ensure this does not happen.

Have noticed Clutch judder from cold on the toyota and Honda I have owned, but not on any fords. Not sure if the dual mass flywheels fitted to many cars now dampen this.

Golf Mk 4 SDI would allow clutch engagement at idle with first gear.

Passat B5.5 PD stalls if this is tried. SWMBO stalls it frequently, sometimes on roundabouts. Only need a touch of right pedal in first gear is needed. [Clutch judder can occur in damp weather temporarily.]
Now -I find petrols need revving a lot more 2,500rpm or so initially for a smaller engine.

I can reverse the Mondeo onto the drive (fairly steep dropped kerb) without touching the throttle (sic), but that's an "old school" diesel, and near impossible to stall.

The Renault is much more petrol like in that it prefers revs when pulling off or manoevuring at slow speeds. About 1500 RPM and it's more than happy.

Re the clutch judder on cold, the Renault does it sometimes after standing overnight in really cold or damp weather. we're talking maybe one morning in 30 - something of that order. If it does it, it will happen on the initial pull away from the house to the end of the street, and again when pulling out of the street. After that, it's fine. Hasn't got worse or more frequent in 10 months of ownership.

cheers

I drive a diesel Yaris and test drove a 1.0 petrol.
On both cars you need at least 1500rpm to move off cleanly. The 1.0 delivers little torque at slow revs.. and the diesel turbocharger only kicks in at 1600rpm.

I should add I get no clutch judder. If I spin the front wheels on wet raods, I get lots of jerky wheelspin but that's a different thing.

I've never driven any Yaris with clutch judder: in fact theonly car I have driven with (severe!) clutch judder was a 1953 Austin A30 which had badly worn gerabox and engine rubber mountings. As a student (it cost £30), I just drove it as it was for 15,000 miles. - and several gallons of oil.

A quick update.....

Yesterday we picked up the car from the garage and it's now on it's 5th Clutch and hopefully this one will last. We were told it's had a modified clutch plate, cover and bearing installed and Toyota admitted that they had NOT installed this type of clutch before in our car - yet after consulting Toyota Techs they were told they needed to fit the modified parts.

At the moment it's fingers crossed and everything is working fine!!
