Shame, but £1600 to insure 3rd party, fire and theft? Insurance company obviously didn't really want him. I wonder why...

Seems these guys were somewhat luckier - albeit in a rather stickier situation.

What a clown.
If he was so dim to leave his car on a beach thankfully it happened after two days before he had a proper chance to inflict himself on other motorists on the road with something between their ears.

"so dim to leave his car on a beach"
Note that in both stories that the people involved were not "locals". It often strikes me that people who get into such trouble are just unaware of the power of the weather/waves/tides/currents at the coast or sand that looks firm but can act like quicksand. Every winter there are stories of cars/people washed off marine drives when "going for a look at the waves".
It's ignorance rather than stupidity. Most people just experience the sea (or maybe just a swimming pool?)on a nice summer's day with a light breeze - somewhat different from a winter's day with a gale blowing.

He said - somewhere else, perhaps - that he thought he could drive on the Blackpool sand like you can at Southport. Apparently he didn't think there was a clue in the fact that he was the only one doing it.

Truckle, If you think that is expensive insurance then you have not tried to insure a young male driver recently.

i live overlooking the sea in southend and have a good view of a slipway that can be used to get car access to the beach.
so far this yr ive seen 3 cars that needed rescue and were out just in time.
people park there as there is a great sunset view but forget the beach is wet and the car sinks a little and when they want to leave they are stuck

The lifeboatman's comment after the second incident is almost as stupid;
"hopefully they will have a think about how they go about it next time," said Mr Steadman.

Thats why I have now sold my business, employing was becoming a nightmare. I don't know what they teach in schools nowdays but Common sense is not on the curiculum for sure.

"But... £1600 to insure a £400 punto"
Nooooooo!
It's only £1600 to insure a £400 Punto when the Punto's driver is a muppet......
|
its 1600 for ANY teenage boy of 17 just passed its test to insure any car. You wanna drive thats what you pay.
Its because ALL 17/18 year old boy drivers are muppets.

When I was 18 my Fiat cost me £1100 and £900 TPFT to insure, not four times the value of the car! That just defies logic. But then, I am a woman, and I've given up trying to understand men!

I did until 1995 when an American (in Albany NY) told me I looked like a typical "limey" down to my $100 watch and my knotted hanky.

It's not the cost of repairing the manky Punto that the insurers are worrying about - it's the cost of repairing the nice car that he hits!
[I had a 3500S then a BMW 3.0Si when I was 18 - only £263 fully-comp with the Pru.]
|
Had a mk3 Zodiac at 18, and numerous other similar motors, ended up banger racing the mk3, and loads of Rover 90's, Westminsters etc.
I know i should be shot for destroying such cars but we didn't know then and i was spending my youth in pursuit of hooliganism, great fun though.
Can't remember how much the insurance was.
Quick tale, bought a Rover 90 sitting on a trailer in field ( bought that as well the trailer not the field) surrounded by about 5 years worth of brambles, nettles etc; put jump leads on it, drop of petrol in and she fired first touch, won't happen with the new stuff methinks.
Used to tow that trailer with me mk4 zodiac. Call for the men in white coats.

"Crocs, surely?"
If there are crocs in the water, PG, don't go near them - they bite. There are better ways to end it all...... :)

Crocs ? Crocs ?!
Oh puhleeeze ! The footwear equivalent of the shell suit.................. just don't ! Bear in mind the photos you take now may be shown to future generations, is that how you want to be remembered ? "Aye your Grandad / Grandma had great taste in cars but check the shoes !"
The sandal has been a design classic since the dawn of time......even "the big man" wore 'em ! ;-)

Witnessed an incident many years ago on the beech at Little Hampton, a vehicle reverses onto beech to retrieve a trailor and small boat.Unable to get back to safety the coast guard arrive to tow with a land rover this got stuck, second land rover appeared and this also got stuck in the sand.By this time a large crown had gathered to watch the fiasco,by this time the car-boat and trailor were awash. The crowd of onlookers without much organising went into action and pulled one at a time all three vehicles up to safety by hand. The drowned vehicle was left to drain and the coast guard left rather red faced.

The crowd of onlookers without much organising went into action and pulled one at a time >> all three vehicles up to safety by hand.
I've been stuck on a beach before and I'm pretty amazed that 5 lads couldn't free a small car like a Punto between them.

Injection Doc, you complain about the current school curriculum but I would question your mastery of 'English Language'.

That piece of writing would make a good exam text: Put the following passage into correct English.
There are at least 8 mistakes in spelling and punctuation.

muppets !!, does any one still use that word apart from jamie oliver and other wannabe mockneys .... oh and the radio presenters on talksport ?
|
The poor lad (muppet) has an additional problem, with all the publicity about his loss he'll have to declare it at renewal time.
|
after 5 years the sands of time means he will no longer need to declare it though
just water off a ducks back
we shall sea eh
i dont want to make waves
maybe he should just buy a boat?
|
Several sub threads here from the original.
1. Muppets. Yes agree. And as someone else pointed out, the five lads should have been able to concoct a solution - like get out and push/pull. We've probably all been guilty of similar muppetry but I'd like to think that a bit of Common Sense should prevail - like get a rope, cobble together a gang of muscle or promise an IOU to the recovery chap.
2. Lifeboat incident. What I want to know is what would an inshore RIB with 2/3 crew have actually hoped to do in the event that the van was actually washed into the bay (and presumably sunk). Also, one of the occupants was presumably in the back - is this legal?
3. Cars awash. I remember being on the beach in Walton on Naze 20 yrs ago+ and watching an old Landy conking out after launching a boat too deep off the sand. The tide eventually rose right up to its roof line. Later on as the tide retreated the Landy was pulled out by a JCB. The best bit is that about 2 hours later I saw the same Landy driving through town with about 6 people in it and still dripping seawater from all orrifices.
|
Consider the tow firms that turned these young lads down as seemingly they could only put together £25.
No one expects charity, but I would be surprised if they did not offer to pay the full £60 later, perhaps via a parent.
Surely the £25 would have covered immediate operator costs anyway for a Blackpool based tow?
What does it involve? half a mile to the beach and less than ten minutes on the sand?
They seem real `characters`, in not pulling a group of kids off the beach, wonder if they would expect a little slack or goodwill from people in a different field if their own kids got into trouble away from home?
Regards
|
|
I think they should have towed the vehicle away and held to ransom (so to speak) for a decent fee. The car would have been washed away and caused much more of a problem, even if just polution.
|
|
Have to admit that I would have promptly called another recovery firm and lied about how much cash I had!

Anyone else sniff a YouTube-type prank here?
