With respect to those who are afflicted in this way. I have in front of me a car insurance brochure from Marks & Spencer. On the back page they say that they are also able to provide this document in Braille. I wonder why.

Yes-you can be registered blind with acute tunnel vision but the only eyesight test for driving is the number plate test which is not affected by tunnel vision.

I was in Asda's ( Wallmart's ) car park today, parked as far away from the doors as possible, and whilst walking to the main entrance across the car park I saw a driver ( no gender ) just drive straight into a stationary car that was waiting for a car to pull out. I assume the driver was blind, sure seemed to be, the car was right in front of her ( Gender out oh bother ! ). I handed the innocent driver a business card and carried on after noting the make model and reg of the vehicles. Regards Peter

I would think that blind people would be well advised not to drive but this reminded of when
I once found a blind mans white stick which had been left outside a shop in the local town so I decided to take it to the local police station to hand in .

I was with SWMBO so we decided to have a laugh with her holding and directing me along with stick in hand to the car .....I then got some pretty peculiar looks from other drivers in the car park as I climbed into my car carrying the stick and drove off ......

I went to the nick and handed it over and the desk sergeant showed me the previous entry in their lost and found book - Lost - one white stick so all ended well with the stick returned to the old chap who lost it.

There is nothing to stop a blind person owning a car which is insured for others to drive :~} They would then need to 'read' the policy.

The medical guidelines also refer to "a field of at least 120 degrees". Not being an opthalmic optican I am unable to intepret this fully but would think most people approach 180 degrees. Perhaps a professional optician could comment.

Read somewhere of a pilot on a small post war airline who used to pull a similar stunt.

Surely not!

Would they not be stopped under the fit to drive laws.

I knew an epileptic who was not able to drive - but could pass a test any day of the week. I also new a man with tunnel vision who the doctors had ordered not to drive.

Most dangerous story was a mate of a mate who was driving a blind person in a van.

When they got to a junction the blind person said "clear my way" and the driver pulled out automatically. There were lots of schreeching of brakes and the the air was blue.

I don't think the blind man got a lift again.

Not quite sure what you're getting at. Care to explain?

I don't know exactly, but I know someone who suffers from epilepsy but hasn't had a fit in years and years because of the drugs he's taking. This means that he's safe to drive.

Isn't there some law where you can drive if you've not had a fit in a certain amount of time.

Just because you suffer from epilepsy doesn't mean you can't drive, just that if it's not controlled then you could have a fit while you're driving.

In answer to Chris White's post, IIRC it was about 2 to 3 years after the last epileptic fit.

However there may be changes to this now.

I do know of one chap who was unfortunately rear ended by a van driver who was suffering a fit. Apparently the driver had no history of epilepsy. Quite scary to think it could flare up like that.

I believe it is one year fit-free and medical agreement - or was for a friend. Their fit was caused by a brain tumour - fits can have all sorts of causes.
The reason my husband no longer drives is because he was so horrified by the potential consequences of blacking out. He had a stroke when 48 - one minute he was standing in the kitchen and the next out like a light - and was only coming to , incapable of much at that time, in an ambulance some time later. He could drive but feels he would be irresponsible despite recovering well from the stroke.

Speaking from personal experience: 1 year seizure free (fit isn't used anymore) and normally 1, 2 or 3 year medically restricted licence. Then 10 years seizure free and a 'normal' ten year licence is given.

We were banned in work from using the term 'brainstorm': apparently such a term may be offensive to people (like me) who have epilepsy (and it isn't) since it can be linked to describing (however crudely) the atypical electrical activity that causes seizures. One must use the term 'thoughtshower' now... :)

According to the urban legend, it was a senior captian on one of the Pan Am clipper services. He used to enter at the rear in full uniform, cap, dark glasses and tap down the isle noisily with his white stick to the flight deck, where the tapped on the door and he crew would open the door to a loud shout of "Good Morning Captain"

My old man only had one good eye for most of his life and in his later years was developing cataracts in his good eye.

This was in the sixties when eye surgery was not as advanced as today and his judgement of distance was pretty poor, especially turning right off a main road into a side turning .

He tended to drive by bringing his other senses to bear , ie the louder the screams from the passengers the quicker he took avoiding action .

Right, ok, so its taken as read that he can't see (no eyes) and been told he must take an extended driving test - does the examiner have to direct him like his friend did?

Confirmation that the Law is a pink fluffy dice......
