Im looking to buy a diesel and have been attracted to the mondeo tdci and the peugeot 406 hdi (110) prices vary greatly but seems i could get hold of either of them (Y to a 51 plate ) but with quite high miles ranging from 80000 to 140000 for *aroun* £2,500 to £3,000
My question is are both these cars good and reliable *after* covering 100,000 miles ? Lots of ads say "nothing for a diesel" but i cant help feeling its a lot.
Whats my best bet and any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

100,000 miles is nothing for any engine, these days.
I can't comment on those two engines but bear in mind that every other component (clutch, gearbox, suspension, brakes, etc) will also have done 100k and be very well worn.
£3000 for a 140,000 miler sounds expensive for any car given the lack of demand for used cars over 5 years old!

I agree £3k is too much for a Y-reg 406 HDi with 140k on the clock, but bear in mind the strangely high residuals of PSA turbo-diesels. This is because they usually give reliable service for intergalactic mileages, but as RT says, see if it's had a clutch etc recently.
As for the mileage in general, 100k on a properly maintained car is like 5k on a neglected car. If someone's been dropping the oil & filter at regular intervals, the engine will be happy and will most likely outlast the gearbox.
How about a Hyundai Elantra 2.0 CRDi? Absolutely no street-cred so they're dirt-cheap. Popular as a taxi around here, so that speaks volumes about the engine. Might be some about with less miles on than the Pugs you're looking at too.

The last thing you need to worry about is the engine, they're mostly bomb proof. What is a concern is the fueling system, £,00's for injectors, £,000's for the fuel pump and a miracle if you can find someone to fault find accurately on them.
Having said that, I'm pottering about in a tdci mondeo, now with 130k on the clock and it's still going well, but as I drive 30k miles PA then I want something that's economical, comfortable and capable of carrying five adults in reasonable comfort. I can also afford to take the gamble of it going horribly expensively wrong at some stage and I've got access to the mechanics that the trade round here use.

Chap I know got a rover -not the new 75 shape but the one before- diesel and he has had nothing but praise for it. It cost peanuts and he has sofar had to put in a new battery and the odd tyre. He gets a comfy car with lots of room and decent performance too.
