The bearings which are small roller type in this axle run on the stub axle, and due to water etc getting in they rust and stop rolling this wears the axle. The bearings are available from dealers but the axle surface is ussually rusty and worn so they don't last. The axles can also be a pig to come apart due to rust on the torsion bar splines so it's better to go to your local scrappy and get a used rear axle assembly this is easy to change my local braker charges around £75.00 for the part.

the axles can be refurbed although im not to sure on cost, there is a guide in the article section of www.205gtidrivers.com/ for a 205 axle but all psa torsion bar setups are pretty similer. not a bad job really just time consuming to do

You can't replace the bearing surfaces on a 106 as you can on a 205, basically when it develops play the axle is scrap.
