Insurance and Tax on my Dads car - Paul I
Can I tax a car which is registered in my fathers name but for which i have now purchased insurance for?

My Father has a weekly Hospital visit and has to use a wheel chair over a distance of 100 yards. He has now decided to give up driving, and I have now offered to take him. As I have a Seat Altea it is far easier to use his Volvo 740 Estate to place wheel chair etc in rather than use the Altea. He still wishes to keep the Volvo as my mum uses it occasionally for the trips to the dump etc. However she can't always make it to the hospital hence me driving most weeks.

I've phoned up my insurance company who are happy to insure the car we me as the clearly named driver as long as I have the keeper's permission and it has a valid MOT . The premium wasn't to bad at £200 (more than the car is probably worth!!).

Answers please ...

Just one point. As your mother also drives the car, she is presumably doing this on your father's insurance.

You can't have two insurance policies on one vehicle (to the very best of my knowledge), so if your father's insurance is still valid it might perhaps be better to have you and your mother named as the two main drivers.

I did this with one car I owned that was used entirely by one of the offspring when younger; he was named as the main driver and it was an arrangement that was maintained until he was working, could take out his own insurance and build up his own no claims bonus.

I'm confused by the situation described by the OP - my understanding is that only the RK can insure a car. We tried to insure MIL's car (on which the insurance had expired) for my wife to use and a couple of companies, and then a broker, said it couldn't be done.

Regarding tax - shouldn't be a problem anyway as presumeably the car is insured as Mum uses it, so shouldn't be a problem. Might be easier to do it online if the Post Office aren't happy with the docs.

BP

I think it differs from Ins Co..granted most don't in fact the online mine said no but I phoned them and explained my postion as I felt regular use was honest than the "TPF" for emergency use clause. £200 paid and I have a certificate in hand.

I used to insure my brothers car in my name to use when he was away abroad. ISTR you have to talk to proper insurer/broker rather than the cherry picking cheapo's and web based ones though.
