I've had to claim on my insurance three times in last five years and all because of my wife keeps hitting things at low speed. It's an ongoing joke that she's trying to reshape my car into an Ferrari like the Peugeot Ad in india.

Which would an insurer prefer: the occasional low-speed mistake that bends a panel or two, or a reckless overtaking manoeuvre on a blind crest that kills the family coming the other way? Women may be more prone to the former; the latter behaviour is overwhelmingly male. No, neither sex is 'all like that' but those are the trends and you can bet insurers have the claims data to prove it.

I agree. If men crash they do it properly.
Trouble for me is that in many many years of driving I've had a completely bash free history and then I got married.

I agree with WilDeBeest, but I have an interesting "devil's advocate" argument that one of my friends, fed up to the back teeth of being bleated at by his over-confident Spice Girl wannabe female friends (you know the type) that women "are, like, better at everything so of course they're better at driving". came up with.

He strongly believes that the statistics for driving across the sexes are distorted by the fact that, he believes, women drive far less mileage than men. Again, the caveat of it not being a blanket comment, but how many couples do you know where the female will say "Oh we're driving from Edinburgh to Southampton? Brilliant, can I drive?". Doesn't happen does it?

Also, I think the 18-24 or thereaboutsish age group unfairly distort male statistics as well.

Great point stevied. When travelling by car as a couple I always drive and I bet 99% of other couples do the same.

When I've rung up to get insurance quotes for my other half the ladies only companies have, without exception, been more expensive than standard insurance companies. I'm sure there is a reason for this!

I didn't ask them, but does anyone know if these companies insure parters/spouses. There are some blokes who might want/need to drive their girls motors from time to time.

When Mrs B first had a car of her own she insured it with Diamond as (having no insurance history) the premium was about half what other people wanted. AFAIR they didn't have a problem with adding spouse as named driver.

TBH the thing that induced her to change providers was the fact that Diamond's policies only run for 10 months, which meant an unnecessarily frequent shelling out of large sums of money by way of premiums. Luckily the insurer she moved to was prepared to recognise 20 months' worth of Diamond NCB as 2 years, and she is now on a more normal 12 month policy.
