I was told it was 1 2 4 3 or 1 3 2 4 or something similar, however its currently 1 2 3 4.
The engine seems smooth enough and I haven't noticed any miss fires so would it be obvious if the firing order was wrong?

I thought it was 1 3 4 2 for 4 cyl engines. I am sure it isn't 1 2 3 4 but if it works for you why worry? I bet the fuel consumption will be rubbish though, if the firing order is wrong.

It wont be that,it will be 1 2 4 3 OHV,OHC 1 3 4 2
>>so would it be obvious if the firing order was wrong? Yes

All Ford four cylinder Ohv(1959-2002) were 1-2-4-3.Watch out for the Peugeot diesels used by Ford in Granada,Cortina and Sierra-for some reason #1 was at the other end and they were 1-3-4-2.

What's drawn you to that conclusion?

I think you may be mistaken and not sure how to identify the firing order (which is 1243).
Looking at the distributor cap, if you follow the ignition lead to the spark plug at the end opposite to the flywheel end (it will be at the end in front of the driving seat (rhd car). if you take off the cap and let someone spin the engine over you will see the direction the rotor arm travels in. Replace the cap and follow the lead next to no 1 in the direction of rotation of the rotor arm and it will lead to no.2 plug. Follow the next and it will go to no. 4.
hope this helps, but if you are still convinced its 1234 then I will try and explain a bit more for you.
For further information although it may well run on 1234 firing order it will only be running on 2 cylinders and you will notice it !

1234 cant be right , piston 1 and 4 are 360 out of sync as are 2 and 3 in pairs if you know what i mean
|
|
It should be written in embossed digits somehwere on the engine casting.......certainly on the odd Vauxhall I've tinkered with

Ford-occasionally on inlet manifold-never on block.

The rotor arm in these distributors turns in an anti-clockwise direction unlike most which are clockwise.

Don't try checking the rotor arm. It's a Mk3 Fiesta - it doesn't have one.
